Vonn Misses Austria Trip
Friday, Oct. 23
Vonn took to Facebook to announce her decision not to compete in Oct. 24's race:
On Oct. 22, Vonn told reporters she feels "awesome," ahead of her return, according to the Associated Press (via ESPN.com):
"The American said, "I didn't feel anything. It didn't hurt and it wasn't swollen afterward ... A lot better than I expected, honestly."
"
After a crash this August in New Zealand took her out of action, Vonn confirmed that she's healthy on her Facebook page on Oct. 19.
Vonn Looking to Overcome Latest Setback Due to Injury
The 2010 Winter Olympics gold medalist and four-time World Cup overall champion is just 31 years old and has dealt with major injuries in recent years. Vonn couldn't compete in the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, because of two surgeries on her right ACL.
It's a testament to Vonn's competitiveness and will to succeed that she's managed to overcome those health hurdles in the past and continue on in such a high-speed, extreme sport. If she can remain healthy and string together some strong results in the coming years, Vonn ought to be ready for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
But the next Olympics are a long way down the road. For now Vonn has to prove she's still capable of competing at an elite level. That journey begins upon her return to competition, and Monday's news is a step in the right direction for one of the most notable American skiers in recent memory.
