Frys.com Open 2015: Friday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights
Apparently, Napa Valley isn't just wine country. The Frys.com Open completed its second round of play in California on Friday to open up the 2015-16 PGA Tour season.
Some of the biggest names in golf are competing to start their seasons off on the right foot as we take a look at the updated leaderboard after Day 2:
| 1 | Brendan Steele | -11 | -2 (70) |
| T2 | Will Wilcox | -9 | -5 (67) |
| T2 | Jhonattan Vegas | -9 | -1 (71) |
| T2 | Graham DeLaet | -9 | -4 (68) |
| T2 | Harold Varner III | -9 | -2 (70) |
| T6 | Martin Laird | -8 | -1 (71) |
| T6 | Justin Rose | -8 | -3 (69) |
| T6 | Russell Henley | -8 | -3 (69) |
| T6 | Justin Thomas | -8 | -2 (70) |
Brendan Steele leads the Frys.com Open after the second round. He shot two under par Friday, putting him at 11 under overall. The PGA Tour noted this is his first time sitting alone in first place after 36 holes of play.
His big first round, which saw him go nine under, set him up nicely to stay at the top of the leaderboard. It wasn't a huge Friday for Steele compared to his opener, but his two-under second round was enough to keep him in the lead.
The PGA Tour showed one of his five birdies on the day:
He was being chased by Justin Thomas early Friday. Thomas used a great start to pull even with Steele at 10 under after starting on the back nine with four birdies. But he slumped on his final nine of the day, culminating with a double bogey on No. 6. He's tied for sixth at eight under.
A four-way tie featuring Jhonattan Vegas and Will Wilcox has replaced Thomas in second place at nine under for the tournament.
Wilcox had another consistent round Friday, recording a five-under with five birdies following a four-under from the first round. He had one of the shots of the day with this approach on No. 10, as the PGA Tour showed:
He was pleased with his performance, too, taking to Twitter after his round:
It was also a clean day for Vegas, who recorded two birdies and parred the rest of the course. He and Wilcox are joined by Graham DeLaet and Harold Varner III in the tie for second.
Rory McIlroy was also in action, going one under on a day that saw him par 15 of 18 holes. He is tied for 19th at five under overall.
He drove well throughout the day, as the PGA Tour showed his monster drive on the 10th hole:
The top players on the leaderboard are beginning to separate from the rest of the pack. Eight players are within three strokes of Steele's lead. With the leader's ability to rattle off a big day like he did Thursday, he might be difficult to catch over the final two rounds.
