NCAA Football Rankings 2015: Analyzing Week 7 Polls and Top 25 College Standings
The only thing that feels certain after six unexpected weeks of the 2015 college football season is that nobody envies the job that's ahead of the College Football Playoff selection committee.
From national powerhouses struggling to eke out wins over lowly foes to others coming seemingly out of nowhere to contend for conference titles, the unexpected has been the norm when it comes to Top 25 teams. The upset-heavy nature of Week 5 didn't continue into this weekend, but there was still plenty of movement across the rankings.
Take a look below at the Week 7 Top 25 for three major polls—the Associated Press, Amway Coaches Poll and Bleacher Report.
For a second straight week, both of the Big Ten's elite teams—or at least the teams we thought were the elite ones at the start of 2015—had to fight to stay unbeaten.
The top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes were once again tested, this time in a game that was tied early in the third quarter against lowly Maryland. They finished on a 28-7 run to close out the game before prevailing 49-28, but Michigan State struggled mightily in a skin-of-its-teeth 31-24 win over Rutgers.
The dominating offensive attack of Baylor is having no such troubles, dismantling Kansas 66-7 in another convincing performance. The Bears are putting up points at a historic pace, as ESPN Stats and Info observed:
Baylor's hot start to 2015 has the Bears topping the Bleacher Report rankings entering Week 7, but their schedule stiffens up in the coming weeks. The Bears host West Virginia next week and still have Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and the all-mighty TCU left to play.
Speaking of the Horned Frogs, they nearly saw their undefeated season fall to the wayside until a big comeback from quarterback Trevone Boykin. His 55-yard touchdown pass to Josh Doctson sealed a close 52-45 victory over Kansas State.
From terrible defenses to a dominant one, the Michigan Wolverines are absolutely throttling opponents on that side of the ball. Michigan blanked Northwestern 38-0, marking the team's third straight shutout.
With Michigan State visiting the Big House this weekend, Todd Fuhrman of SportsLine.com issued a warning:
The Wolverines aren't the only team fresh off a coaching change that is light-years ahead of schedule for contending at the top of the college football world. Also joining them are the Florida Gators, who improved to 6-0 with a 21-3 win over Missouri.
The Gators will also get their toughest test of the season—along with Michigan—this Saturday, gearing up to face fellow SEC unbeaten LSU and Heisman Trophy favorite Leonard Fournette.
With these two big matchups on the slate for Week 7, along with many more pivotal matchups, we'll begin to find out more about which teams are truly CFP contenders.
Either that, or we'll continue to learn we don't know anything about who the few elite teams are.
