Mexico vs. USA: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2015 Confederations Cup Playoff

Joe PantornoOct 10, 2015

In a frenzied extra-time period, Paul Aguilar's 118th-minute goal lifted Mexico to the CONCACAF Cup title and a place in the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia with a 3-2 win over the United States on Saturday night.

Mexico grabbed the lead on two earlier occasions in the match, once in extra time, only to have the United States find a rebuttal each time.

SB Nation Soccer showed Aguilar's game-winner:

It was an enthralling match from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, that captivated its viewers even with playoff baseball being played down the road at Dodger Stadium. ESPN's Michael Wilbon was reveling in the drama:

Even SportsCenter couldn't help but get into the mix:

The scoring in regular time came in quick succession Saturday night. Javier Hernandez, better known as Chicharito, opened the scoring thanks to a beautiful play from the Mexican attack in the 10th minute.

By the time the ball got to Hernandez, goalkeeper Brad Guzan didn't have a chance. Fox Sports shared the replay:

The lead didn't last long. Winning a free kick in the 15th minute, Michael Bradley found the head of defender Geoff Cameron, who blasted the ball past Moises Munoz, who was rooted to his spot.

Fox Sports showed the defender's powerful header:

That was all the scoring the first 90 minutes would see. Mexico dominated most of the game, holding 63 percent of possession.

With an aggressive attack that seemed relentless at times, El Tri should have found a tiebreaker. Chicharito had one of the best chances of the match in the 59th minute.

Another brilliant play from the midfield had a cross rolling toward an unmarked Chicharito with Guzan out of position. Fox Soccer showed what happened next:

The Men in Blazers might have been as shocked as anyone else by the miss:

Into extra time both sides went, and Mexico's offensive persistence finally paid off in the 96th minute thanks to Oribe Peralta. After another long ball into the box, Aguilar managed to send a low cross right to the feet of Peralta, who finished emphatically.

SB Nation Soccer shared the replay:

But the United States would not go away and somehow found an equalizer again in the 108th minute thanks to substitute Bobby Wood, who came in for Jozy Altidore. Being played through by DeAndre Yedlin, Wood rolled his chance through Munoz and into the back of the net.

MLS was shocked:

Despite coming in a losing effort, it was a record-breaking goal for the United States, as ESPN Stats & Info pointed out:

It wasn't enough, though, as Aguilar and Mexico found a way to punch their ticket to Russia. With Mexico having outshot the U.S. 23-14 on the night, it seemed like a matter of time, too.

CBS Sports' Sam Vecenie realized that as well:

It's a sobering loss for U.S. national coach Jurgen Klinsmann, who addressed the media after the match:

Losing a game that late in extra time will always hurt a team. Losing in that fashion to a geographical rival adds a bit more salt to the wound. Now the United States can turn all of its focus toward World Cup qualifying.

But the team's preparation for the tournament will take a hard hit after not being able to play in the Confederations Cup in 2017.
