Manchester United Transfer News: Cristiano Ronaldo Bid Readied, Latest Rumours

Matt JonesSep 30, 2015

Manchester United will put together a staggering package in an attempt to lure Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, according to reports.

Fichajes (h/t Marc Williams of the Daily Star) claim the Red Devils are ready to part with £92.5 million to bring the Portuguese sensation to the Premier League again and will be willing to pay their former No. 7 a lucrative annual salary of £14.7 million. According to Williams, Ronaldo is “increasingly likely” to leave the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the current season.

Ronaldo enjoyed a wonderful spell at Old Trafford earlier in his career, and his name still rings out around the iconic stadium on matchdays. Here’s why so many United fans would love to have him back:

It’s claimed by Fichajes that United would be willing to pay so much due to the monetary returns Ronaldo would add from a commercial perspective.

Indeed, Ronaldo has established himself as a global brand. As he revealed on his official Twitter feed recently, there’s even a documentary film coming out about him soon:

Factor in his association with Nike, fragrance deals and underwear lines, to name but a few, and Ronaldo is not only one of the biggest names in sport but in any walk of life. Still, it’s not his global brand that will keep United fans excited about a possible return one day, it’s his displays on the field.

Ronaldo has taken his game up a level since moving from the Red Devils to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009. His goalscoring for the club has been truly remarkable, and ahead of Los Blancos’ clash with Malmo in the Champions League on Wednesday, he’s just two goals away from becoming the all-time top scorer in Real’s storied history.

When you consider how quickly he has got to such a massive total compared to other giants, it makes the achievement all the more impressive:

Still, there are drawbacks to any potential deal. The sum aforementioned would be a remarkable amount of money to spend on a 30-year-old player—Ronaldo is 31 in February 2016—and there are a lot of United supporters, as strong as their affinity is with Ronaldo, who would rather see that kind of money invested into the club’s infrastructure.

Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Johnson, looking at a possible deal from PSG’s perspective, also outlined some issues Ronaldo may cause:

Ronaldo would return to United a very different player. His game revolves around scoring goals now and, as he continues to move towards the twilight of his career, will most likely become more and more centred around these predatory instincts.

It would be wonderful to see him strutting his stuff in the Premier League again, and United are a club with the financial clout to pull off a deal. But Ronaldo is very much a figure of the club’s past at this juncture; if £92.5 million was invested into the club’s framework, they’d see greater organic development and have a much better chance of uncovering a player who could scale similar heights to the cherished ex-star.
