4 Most Frustrating Things About Being a Bayern Munich Fan Right Now

Stefan BienkowskiSep 7, 2015

For many football fans around the world, it must seem like such an easy, delightful time be a Bayern Munich fan. Not only are your side the standalone favourites for the league title each year, but you also enjoy the delights of Pep Guardiola's football week in, week out.

Yet when you scratch below the gloss that has been so heavily applied to the last few seasons in Munich, it won't be long before you begin to find some minor grumblings and notable complaints about certain aspects of the club today.

There are some things that still bother Bayern fans each and every season. Here are four of them.

Mario Gotze

There are two Mario Gotzes. One is an international superstar who very recently won the World Cup with an exquisite goal against Argentina. From there, he has gone on to carve out a spot in the German national team that may well see him become their most important player at Euro 2016.

The other is a benchwarmer at Bayern Munich.

Of course, the former Borussia Dortmund star's time in Munich has, to a certain extent, been slightly overblown in terms of what he's actually achieved.

He is very much a member of the squad, but for many Bayern fans, he simply isn't the same man who continues to shine in the white, red and black of Die Mannschaft.

Inevitablity of Guardiola's Departure

Bayern may have one of the best managers in the world who has promised and, to an extent, delivered on the basis that he would bring continued success to the Munich side.

Yet from day one, there has always been the senseif not the promisethat Guardiola would be moving on one day.

Perhaps it's just the nature of the modern coach, but the former Barcelona manager has never seemed to shy away from the fact that to him this Bayern side are just a project—another three-year plan to stick in the portfolio once everything is said and done.

This has never been more evident than this season, when many expect the Spanish coach to move on to pastures new with or without the coveted European Cup in hand.

If he wins it, fans may overlook the cold relationship. If he doesn't, many may wonder if a more authentic, possibly German coach would have been more ideal.

A Boring League Campaign

3 of 4

Most German football fans probably won't admit it, but when it comes to the Bundesliga title race, there's one truth: There isn't one.

Once we finally accept this and face the elephant in the room, we can acknowledge that Bayern will most likely walk to their fourth league title this season.

Yet as annoying as that may be for Wolfsburg or Dortmund fans, it's almost certainly just as frustrating to the punters who show up at the Allianz Arena every second week. There, they pay a sizeable sum to simply watch a match with very little contest in it.

Winning titles and trophies is fun, but the shine very quickly comes off it when there's no one around to challenge you for it. Any tournament is only as good as the competition to win it, and right now, Bayern's Bundesliga titles don't stack up to much.

No European Cups

4 of 4

Following on from the previous point, it's worth noting just how much of this club's identity is based on its performances in the UEFA Champions League, or what was once called the European Cup.

Bayern define themselves on their five European trophies and undoubtedly demand that each new coach aims to add to that collection.

However, despite what Jupp Heynckes achieved the season before he arrived, Guardiola hasn't been able to match his predecessor in continental campaigns. Considering the amount of time, effort and money Bayern put into bringing the former Barca coach to Munich, this has gone down as something of a failure thus far.

Quite simply, Guardiola hasn't yet matched up to the expectations asked of him to win a European Cup. And that's something that the fans are certainly not too proud of as things stand.
