Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Neymar and David De Gea Rumours

Matt JonesAug 29, 2015

Barcelona winger Neymar has ruled out the prospect of a move to Manchester United, claiming that he is more than happy with life in Spain.

As reported by Martin Domin of the MailOnline, the Red Devils have been linked with a possible big-money move for the Brazil skipper in a late bid to bolster their attacking options. But Neymar, who made his first appearance of the season for Barcelona in Saturday’s win over Malaga, has ruled out a transfer.

“I want to stay at Barcelona, no matter how many million pound offers come from England,” the Blaugrana star told TV3, per Domin’s piece. “The people from Barca can be calm. When I hear things like this, I don't think anything. I just heard it and I am calm. I am very happy at Barca and with my colleagues.”

Bleacher Report’s Sam Tighe ran the rule over United’s chances of landing the Selecao skipper:

For the Red Devils, it certainly would have been an ambitious move. After all, Neymar is no longer a capricious young wide player, he’s a critical part of this Barcelona side and a player who makes vital contributions in precarious moments of matches.

As such, it’s difficult to see why Barcelona would be keen to cash in on his exceptional talent and, as FourFourTwo’s Andy Mitten noted in jest, why he would want a switch to Manchester at this stage of his career:

Stepping out of Lionel Messi’s significant shadow is a prospect that any man walking the earth would find difficult, but for the Brazilian, playing and scoring alongside arguably the greatest player ever seems to be a privilege.

There may come a time when Neymar feels as though he’s achieved all he can at Barcelona and that he fancies a new challenge. When that day does come, United are one of the few clubs in world football who possess the financial muscle to lure him away from Catalonia. But with a new five-year deal in the pipeline, per Domin’s piece, that day looks a long way off yet.

United to Stand Firm on David De Gea

Manchester United will not budge in their asking price for unsettled goalkeeper David De Gea, with Real Madrid’s interest set to hot up as the deadline draws nearer.

That’s according to Simon Mullock of the Sunday Mirror, who claims Los Blancos will still have to meet the player’s £30 million valuation if a deal is to go through. As noted by the aforementioned piece, De Gea’s agent Jorge Mendes has flown into Manchester in an attempt to broker a deal to the Spanish giants.

At the moment, Keylor Navas is the man between the sticks at the Santiago Bernabeu and as noted by Andrew Gaffney of Yahoo Sport, some impressive early season performances from the Costa Rican may convince Los Blancos to hold fire on De Gea:

After all, the Spain international only has one year remaining on his United contract, meaning Real could pick the player up for nothing next summer. It leaves the Red Devils in an awkward situation as the end of the window draws increasingly close.

According to Mullock, United have Jasper Cillessen lined up as a replacement should a transfer for De Gea go through. As we can see here courtesy of OptaJohan, he’s been part of an unforgiving Ajax defensive setup in the Eredivisie:

Still, Cillessen is not to the standard of De Gea and that leaves United with a dilemma. Granted, the Spaniard has not featured in any of United’s early season matches, but should he remain at Old Trafford beyond Tuesday’s deadline, you suspect manager Louis van Gaal would slowly integrate him back into the team.

However, if a sizeable sum does come in which can aid United in landing a long-term replacement, it’d be tempting for the Red Devils to take the money and run. It seems inevitable that, this summer or the next, De Gea is bound for the Santiago Bernabeu, and the Red Devils would surely rather be reimbursed for his sale than see the 24-year-old walk away for nothing.
