Stevie Brown Released by Texans: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Joe PantornoAug 28, 2015

The Houston Texas have released safety Stevie Brown, the team announced Saturday.

ESPN's Tania Ganguli initially reported the news on Friday.

Ganguli noted, per a source, that Brown wasn't likely to make the Texans roster, so this gives him a head start to find a new team before the season starts.

Brown, who turned down a contract offer by the New York Giants, according to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, signed with the Texans at the end of April.

Entering his sixth season in the NFL, Brown spent the past three years with the Giants where a torn ACL in 2013 held the safety back from becoming the team's premier defender. In his first year with the Giants in 2012, Brown led the NFL with eight interceptions in 16 games.

He appeared in all 16 games in 2014 after his injury but could not recreate any of his 2012 success, which is why, according to ESPN's Dan Graziano, things did not work out with the Giants and Brown earlier in the offseason. But that might change:

The Giants secondary has been decimated by injuries with the losses of safeties Nat Berhe, Justin Currie, Mykkele Thompson and Bennett Jackson, who all face missing the entire 2015 season, according to Dan Gartland of SI.com.

New York went out and signed veteran Brandon Meriweather to add depth to the position and received a bit of good news, according to Gartland on Thursday, when it was reported that rookie safety Landon Collins is expected to play in the team's next preseason game.

But a couple of healthy safeties won't cut it in a grueling NFL season. The Giants should seriously consider bringing back Brown even though he still might have to learn a new system under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

If Brown can stay healthy and play close to how he did in 2012, the Giants defense would receive a big boost in pass prevention and could have a serious chance to challenge for the NFC East title.
