Russell Wilson Speaks on Recovery Water Comments, NFC Title Game Hit

Timothy RappAug 27, 2015

Russell Wilson has clarified comments he made in a Rolling Stone article that suggested the Seattle Seahawks quarterback healed from a head injury after the NFC Championship Game by drinking Reliant Recovery Water.

Wilson noted in that article, "I banged my head during the Packers game in the playoffs, and the next day I was fine. It was the water." He also said in the article that the water helped to miraculously heal a teammate's knee injury.

Wilson tweeted the following Wednesday, however, trying to further elaborate on what he meant in his initial comments:

And he added more context to his remarks Thursday.

"I didn't have a concussion," Wilson told reporters after practice. "I guess it was perceived wrong. I did not have a concussion. I was saying that I had been consistently drinking the water for a month and a half—five, seven times a day. And I was like, 'Man, maybe this stuff is helping me out.'"

He continued, saying, "I think your brain consists of like 75, 80 percent water, so I think that just being hydrated, drinking the recovery water really does help."

Wilson, 26, is an investor in Reliant Recovery Water and told reporters that his teammates, Kam Chancellor and Russell Okung, also drink the water.

Wilson is coming off an excellent season in which he threw for 3,475 yards and 20 touchdowns, ran for another 849 yards and six scores and led the Seahawks to their second straight Super Bowl appearance.

The medical benefits of Reliant Recovery Water are yet to be determined, with Wilson's agent Mark Rodgers clarifying they don't have "real medical proof" of the drink's healing properties in the Rolling Stone story. However, the long history of athletes being superstitious creatures of habit is well-established. Whatever benefits the drink is having for Wilson, be it physical or mental, will be just fine by the Seahawks.
