Arsenal Transfer News: Grzegorz Krychowiak Release Fee to Be Met, Latest Rumours
Arsenal are reportedly planning on triggering the £21.2 million release clause of Sevilla star Grzegorz Krychowiak and adding some more bite to the midfield areas before the end of the summer transfer window.
That's according to the Independent's Simon Rice, who noted that manager Arsene Wenger is satisfied with the players he currently has at his disposal but still plans on adding to his squad.
The Daily Telegraph (via the Daily Star's Alex Harris) knows Wenger sent scouts to watch Krychowiak during the European Super Cup, which Sevilla lost to Barcelona, and shared comments team-mate Vicente Iborra made earlier this month.

Per the Daily Star's Colin Harvey, Iborra acknowledged he was afraid someone would trigger the 25-year-old's buyout clause, saying: "Of course I am concerned that Krychowiak could be taken away. I always want to have the best players in the team. He brings so much. I hope he stays. I understand Sevilla's position, it is clear, and I hope nobody pays that clause, and he stays with us."
Krychowiak joined Sevilla from Reims in the summer of 2014 as a bit of an unknown quantity, having impressed greatly the two years before. Flying under the radar, plenty of top clubs missed out on the chance to sign him for pennies on the dollar, including the Gunners, according to Bleacher Report's Jonathan Johnson:
The Pole has suddenly become the talk of the town following plenty of speculation linking him with a move to the Emirates, but while casual fans may have never watched him play, pundits like ESPN FC's Janusz Michallik have been talking about him for years.
Since moving to La Liga, the midfielder has introduced himself to a much larger audience, playing a pivotal role in Sevilla's run to the Europa League title. He also started a total of 31 matches in the league, per WhoScored.com.
Krychowiak projects as a great holding midfielder in the Premier League, using his physical abilities and vision to win plenty of ugly battles in the trenches. He's not a skilled playmaker who will dazzle with his passing, although he is technically sound and will contribute near the box.
His greatest asset is what he brings defensively, however. Krychowiak appears all over the pitch, making interceptions and key tackles, and he's remarkably skilled at winning headers in the midfield. Similar to Francis Coquelin, he's not afraid to get his hands dirty, leading to an incredible 13 yellow cards in La Liga last season, per WhoScored.com.
Coquelin is currently slated to start at the holding midfielder position for the Gunners, but behind the Frenchman, depth is limited. The likes of Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are serviceable players, but you have to believe Arsenal could do better.
Krychowiak would present Wenger with an answer and would immediately provide Coquelin with some much needed competition. Whether the Pole will actually make the move in unclear, however. The Daily Telegraph's Jason Burt is optimistic―Bleacher Report's Andy Brassell less so:
Fortunately for the Gunners, Krychowiak's contract contains the release clause, so Wenger doesn't have to worry about negotiating with Sevilla. Provided the player is open to a move, all Wenger would have to do is trigger the clause and convince Krychowiak to hop on a plane to London.
That means Arsenal don't have to rush this particular transfer and can wait until the last minute, giving Wenger plenty of time to make a decision on whether or not he needs Krychowiak to challenge for silverware this season.
