Lucas Digne to Roma: Latest Loan Details, Reaction and More

Matt JonesAug 26, 2015

Roma have continued their impressive summer transfer business with the signing of Lucas Digne on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

Roma confirmed the deal had been finalised on Wednesday, and the Frenchman will be hopeful of getting some regular first-team football at the Stadio Olimpico during the upcoming campaign.

“I chose AS Roma because it’s a legendary club with a big history. I know that in this city and at this club there’s everything you need to have success,” Digne said, according to the club's press release.

Here’s a look at what Digne is capable of at his very best:

Since signing for PSG, things haven’t worked out for the left-back. He’s found veteran defender Maxwell a tough man to dislodge in the position, and as such, he has been limited to appearances in minor matches. For a player with his talent, that will have been hugely frustrating.

Roma should be able to afford Digne the chance to reforge his reputation as one of the most exciting left-backs around. The Giallorossi have already let Ashley Cole and Jose Holebas leave the club this summer, meaning manager Rudi Garcia does have a lack of options in that position. His new signing, you’d imagine, will slot straight in.

It’s a transfer that Roma expert Julian De Martinis is very happy about:

Still only 22 years old, Digne is a player who can go on to scale great heights. While Laurent Blanc clearly didn’t fancy him at PSG, the former Lille man is a bundle of effervescence on the flanks and the kind of player who will thrive in the high-octane style Roma play. He also knows new manager Garcia well from their time together at the Ligue 1 side.

For defenders, Serie A can be a tough league to cope, but Digne has the temperament and technical knowledge to ensure he’ll be a massive success for the Giallorossi. Should he show his class in earnest, it’ll be intriguing to see what’s in store for the player at the end of the 2015-16 term.
