Bournemouth Get 1st-Ever Premier League Win vs. West Ham: Score and Reaction
Premier League newcomers Bournemouth notched their first-ever win in Britain's top division on Saturday, beating West Ham United 4-3 in an early candidate for this year's match of the season. BBC Sport tried to give a brief summary of what went down at Boleyn Ground:
Callum Wilson was the big hero for the Cherries, scoring their first Premier League goal and adding two more to notch his very first Premier League hat-trick. His final goal came from the penalty spot and ultimately secured the win.
Marc Pugh also scored for the visitors, while Mark Noble, Cheikhou Kouyate and Modibo Maiga found the net for the hosts. The Hammers came agonisingly close to securing an equaliser deep in injury time, but Bournemouth managed to clear the ball off the line after a wild scramble in front of goal.
Wilson gave the visitors the lead after 11 minutes, finishing off a nice team move that saw Simon Francis lay the ball off beautifully for the forward. It was the Cherries' first-ever Premier League goal, per the club's official Twitter account.
The 23-year-old was clearly enjoying himself and doubled his tally just before the half-hour mark, pouncing on a defensive miscue before blasting the ball home. Aaron Cresswell was the guilty party, with a poor backpass, and per the Daily Mail's Lee Clayton, it kind of summed up his afternoon:
Bournemouth's two-goal lead evaporated in a hurry early in the second half, with Noble and Kouyate scoring inside of 10 minutes. First, Noble easily converted a penalty after the official saw a trip inside the box, before Kouyate found the back of the net in two tries.
The Cherries seemed ready to crumble and admit defeat, but a superb finish from Pugh restored their lead. Handling the ball with finesse inside the box, he twisted his way toward some space before neatly putting the ball past Darren Randolph.
At this point, the internet was already starting to lose it trying to watch this match. 90min tried to keep his sanity:
Things got even worse when Carl Jenkinson, of all people, brought down Max Gradel inside the box, gifting Bournemouth a penalty and Wilson the chance to complete his hat-trick. The full-back was given a red card for his troubles, and Arsenal blogger YankeeGunner had a word of advice for the king of banter:
Wilson converted the penalty, giving the Cherries a two-goal lead with a man advantage, but Maiga gave the home fans reasons to hope in the 82nd minute. What followed was a wild finale to what had already been a wacky match, and an additional six minutes of injury time, because no one not affiliated with West Ham or Bournemouth wanted the madness to end.
As shared by Jack Pitt-Brooke of the Independent, there was a last-minute goal-line scramble that nearly spoiled the party for the Cherries, but after 97 hard-fought and highly entertaining minutes, Bournemouth captured their first Premier League win:
With the win, Bournemouth are suddenly ranked 10th in the Premier League, an incredible position for the league debutantes. West Ham are sinking fast after their opening-day win over Arsenal, having now lost their last two matches.
The Cherries will like their chances of winning back-to-back matches when they host Leicester City in Week 4, although the Foxes have started the season in spectacular form. Meanwhile, the Hammers travel to Liverpool on Saturday and are in real danger of falling well behind their rivals in the race for European football.
