Manchester United Transfer News: Thomas Muller Opens Up on Red Devils Rumours

Gianni VerschuerenAug 20, 2015

Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller has commented on the rumours linking him with a €100 million move to Manchester United, calling the proposed fee a “crazy” number.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst (h/t Mirror), the Germany international made the comments during a recent interview with Sport1:

"It's basically crazy the numbers which are currently kicking around in football - that's just business. In Dresden, a fan addressed me with a megaphone: 'Hey €100m man, what is your playing shirt worth?' That made me smile."

The 25-year-old has become a regular source of transfer speculation, particularly as United still lack another star forward to complete their business this summer. The club's attack has looked shaky at best early in the 2015-16 campaign, and Muller has already scored more goals on the domestic level this season than United's group of forwards combined.

The Germany international managed 13 goals and 10 assists in the Bundesliga last year, via WhoScored.com. His constant movement around the pitch creates plenty of openings for team-mates, boosting their chances of finding the net in a way that can't be explained by numbers.

At Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney's form remains a major concern, per Bleacher Report's Jonathan Wilson. The Red Devils have few options to turn to apart from the England international.

Bayern remain adamant Muller is not for sale, via football writer Pete O'Rourke. However, that hasn't stopped newspapers from speculating. The Sunday World's Kevin Palmer doesn't see any reason why the Bavarians would sell:

Bastian Schweinsteiger completed a transfer from Bavaria to Old Trafford earlier this summer. It is a move that should give fans of the Red Devils both reasons to believe Muller could follow and reasons to be cautious.

It showed the Germans can be tempted to cash in on a player, but at the same time, it's unlikely Bayern would consider selling two fan favourites to the same club during the same transfer window.

STV Sport's Stefan Bienkowski also pointed out Schweinsteiger was no longer a key player for the Rekordmeister―that isn't the case with Muller:

Muller is a key player for Bayern and spent most of his youth with the club before graduating into the senior side. He's arguably Germany's most talented player and one of the faces of the Bundesliga, so from a commercial and emotional perspective, a sale would be a disaster for the Bavarians.

The Germans clearly don't wish to sell, so the only hope United seem to have lies with Muller. Should the forward decide it's time for a new challenge, he could force a move abroad at some point in the future.

He's yet to give any indication he wants to leave the club at this particular time, however, and barring some last-minute drama, the odds of him leaving Bayern in 2015 are minuscule. If United wish to address their attacking concerns before the end of the transfer window, they'll have to look elsewhere.
