Chelsea Transfer News: Jose Mourinho, Roman Abramovich Reportedly Clash on Pedro

Christopher SimpsonAug 19, 2015

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and owner Roman Abramovich have reportedly clashed over a proposed move for Barcelona's Pedro.

According to Dan King of the Sun (via Jonathan Green of the Daily Star), "Abramovich wants to hijack Manchester United's move for the Spain international, but Mourinho insists he wouldn't fit into his plans."

On Friday, Bleacher Report columnist Guillem Balague put Chelsea behind United and Manchester City in the race for Pedro:

However, as Spanish football expert Sergi Dominguez noted, that may have changed after the disappointing result on Sunday:

As Green suggested, what hasn't changed is Mourinho's apparent stance on the situation.

He added: "The Portuguese manager does not feel he needs another winger forward with Eden Hazard, Oscar, Willian, Victor Moses and Juan Cuadrado already in his squad."

Though Pedro would offer an upgrade on Moses and Cuadrado at the very least, Mourinho's reluctance to accept a player he does not want is understandable.

As Bleacher Report's Allan Jiang previously noted, Abramovich has twice signed expensive forwards seemingly against the wishes of his manager.

Andriy Shevchenko and Fernando Torres were both fine players prior to joining the Blues and cost the owner a combined £80 million.

However, both famously failed to replicate their form as they struggled to fit in at Stamford Bridge and became widely known as expensive flops.

After such high-profile failings, the Russian owner would perhaps do well to heed Mourinho's advice and avoid signing the Barca star if he isn't a target for the manager, despite his obvious talent.

Nevertheless, it seems the club have come out on top in the race for his signature and are going ahead with the player's transfer, per Bleacher Report's own Rik Sharma:

The Spaniard certainly has much to offer Chelsea, and it's wholly possible he could thrive at Stamford Bridge, but if Mourinho can't find a place for him, then it may be difficult for him to get the game time he requires, and if he does, he may not be able to replicate his impressive form with Barcelona.
