Vincent Kompany Taunts Chelsea, Says They Fell for Manchester City's Traps

Gianni VerschuerenAug 17, 2015

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany put his team's big 3-0 win over defending Premier League champions Chelsea down to the way he and his team-mates prepared for Sunday's encounter, adding that the Blues fell for all of the “traps” the Citizens set for them.

As reported by the Daily Mail's Charlie Skillen, the Belgian knew exactly what Chelsea were going to do:

"

I have never felt as prepared for a game as I did for this one.

You could see it – we were setting traps all over the pitch and it planned out perfectly for them.

That may be the advantage of only playing one match a week at the moment.

If I have to give credit to the team for one thing, it was the way we prepared.

There was not one thing Chelsea threw at us that we didn't know about.

City dominated their rivals throughout the first half and deservedly took the lead through Sergio Aguero, before Kompany himself and Fernandinho put the final score on the board after the break. The Blues' level of play improved slightly in the second half, but overall, no one believed City had stolen the win.

Well, no one not affiliated with Chelsea, as observed by Bleacher Report UK's Sean Fay:

Kompany and Eliaquim Mangala were two standouts for City, holding prolific striker Diego Costa at bay throughout the match.

The Spain international's short fuse was on display at the Etihad, as he seemed to be more interested in picking fights than scoring goals. Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas were also unusually quiet, a testament to the way City's defence executed whatever they had planned.

While there were plenty of players who deserved special praise for their performance, manager Manuel Pellegrini shouldn't be forgotten. The Chilean got his tactics spot-on and exploited every weakness the Blues showed, to the delight of former England international Michael Owen:

Kompany's comments paint a similar story, as Pellegrini must have done something right all week long to have his players that focused and ready for the match―although some may wonder why City can't be this prepared for their opponents all the time.

With the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti currently out of a job, Pellegrini needs to bring home some silverware in 2015-16, and a strong showing in Europe is desired following the club's disappointing performances in the Champions League the past few seasons.

If City keep performing like this, he has little to worry about. Kompany clearly enjoyed the way the team got ready for the big clash with Chelsea, and if the captain is this happy with Pellegrini's preparation, other will likely be as well.

We'll find out whether the Citizens can keep it up when they travel to Merseyside to face Everton on Sunday.
