What If Solo Sikoa Beats Roman Reigns For WWE's World Heavyweight Championship?
Oba Femi might be the next big thing in pro wrestling, but Solo Sikoa is catapulting himself to superstardom while standing on his own in Roman Reigns' orbit.
It started innocently enough. Sikoa underwent a subtle character change over the last few months or so, simply being more, well, himself. He's genuinely funny, has an uncanny sense of comedic timing, provides some levity to usually super-serious Bloodline business and can go in the ring.
So now we have to ask…what if Sikoa takes down Reigns for WWE's top title?
Don't laugh. Relax. Calm down, as Sikoa recently told Jey Uso:
Yes, Reigns is very obviously destined to go drop his title to Femi at next year's WrestleMania. He was calling out Femi at last year's 'Mania, after all. It's the next big jump for him and the proverbial passing of the torch.
With Sikoa, though, it wouldn't need to be complicated. A shock win would do him some good. He's got it all right now in terms of character. He's undoubtedly moving merchandise for WWE as his star grows and he gets more exposure.
One thing Sikoa lacks, if anything, is a ring presence. Or the idea of being a serious threat. That's a testament to the storyline and character WWE threw him in for years. It did some damage to his in-ring rep.
Taking down Reigns would pretty quickly fix that up and put Solo on the same level as the next big wave of names like Femi and Bron Breakker.
Talks of power scaling aside, it would just make for a great moment. Stealing a title win from Reigns would help differentiate Sikoa's current arc from the obvious Sami Zayn Bloodline comparisons from years ago.
This idea wouldn't hurt Reigns, either. He can take a loss and still be one of the modern GOATs and a serious threat. Better yet, if he cheats through Bloodline shenanigans to quickly get the title back, it drives home his heel character and would make fans want to see him lose even more. It would also put Sikoa back in chase mode and endear fans to him even more, too.
Bonus points with this idea, too, for shaking up the status quo. Reigns losing to Sikoa would tell fans that things aren't skippable. It would ruin the expectation that a title change won't actually happen until 'Mania. And frankly, if Cody Rhodes can randomly drop his title to help the likes of Zayn and Drew McIntyre in unexpected spots despite being "top guy," then so can Reigns.
There's a matter of when, no doubt. Getting Solo the shock win would require a pretty big stage, not just a random weekly episode. So maybe it happens at Money in the Bank. That would mean waiting until October 10, but it would be a nice runway to keep building up Sikoa.
Right now, most fans expect all the Bloodline stuff just leads to family battles or whatnot in November at Survivor Series. Spicing things up with an unexpected title change would swerve things in a hurry. Reigns could get his win back there, or at a supposed Crown Jewel still happening, or even a special occasion of Raw or something. It's the social media era, they could work something out.
Point is, there's some ground perhaps worth exploring on the Sikoa-beats-Reigns front. WWE needs to reward stars like Sikoa when they find their footing and simply entertain fans this well. He's 33 years old, so investing in him now as part of the next big wave makes a ton of sense.
It helps that Reigns is a star-maker, like it or not. WWE has botched things like, say, Gunther's ascension. Femi is forcing their hand and undeniable. But the promotion has serious problems actually establishing and maintaining guys like Gunther or Breakker.
Taking this suddenly relevant Sikoa and propping him up via Reigns is a pretty unique situation and a possible lightning-in-a-bottle moment. Miss it, and Reigns just has another boring title run on the way to an obvious result and Sikoa might forever toil in the midcard or tag purgatory.
Seize this moment, and Sikoa dethroning Reigns, even for a week, might create an iconic moment serving as another foundational foothold for the next generation of top stars.
