5-Star Brandon McCoy Jr. Reportedly Makes Decision on Michigan Future After Dusty May's Exit
Michigan scored a major win on Saturday following Dusty May's decision to become head coach of the Dallas Mavericks.
Per ESPN's Pete Thamel, Brandon McCoy Jr. intends to honor his commitment to the Wolverines and new head coach Mike Boynton.
Coming off a national title win last season, Michigan had built a strong recruiting class for the 2026-27 campaign when there was no indication May was going anywhere.
May made a surprise move on June 22 when he agreed to take the Mavs' job after Jason Kidd's mutual parting of ways following the hiring of Masai Ujiri as team president.
McCoy was the shining star of Michigan's incoming class as a 5-star recruit and No. 10 overall prospect in the 2026-27 class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.
There had been no strong indications that McCoy was looking to get out of his commitment, but it wasn't out of the question after the head coach who recruited him was no longer in Ann Arbor.
Instead, Boynton has been fantastic at maintaining the status quo after being promoted to the top job. Lincoln Cosby and Joseph Hartman were previously confirmed to be staying before the news about McCoy came down.
McCoy is set to join Michigan after playing four years at Sierra Canyon High School. He was named to the McDonald's All-American team as a senior and won a gold medal with Team USA at the FIBA U-19 World Cup in 2025.
The addition of freshman like McCoy, Cosby and Hartman will help replenish the talent Michigan lost to the NBA. Morez Johnson Jr., Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara were all lottery picks in the 2026 draft.
Michigan finished last season 37-3 and won each of its first five tournament games by at least 13 points. The Wolverines beat Connecticut 69-63 in the championship game to win their first national title since the 1988-89 season.
