Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68 reported Michigan will get $5 million as part of the buyout:

May, 49, will step into the NBA world for the first time after more than two decades as a college coach.

He cut his teeth as an assistant for a number of schools before landing his first head coaching gig at FAU in 2018. May garnered national attention in 2023 when he led the Owls on a miraculous run to the Final Four.

In 2024, he took over as Michigan's head coach, leading the Wolverines to a championship in just his second season.

The Mavs hired Kidd ahead of the 2021-22 season following longtime head coach Rick Carlisle's resignation.

In Kidd's first season at the helm, he took Dallas to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 2011, though the Mavs came up short against the eventual champion Golden State Warriors.

Kidd's successful first campaign seemed to indicate that the Mavs were heading in the right direction, but they struggled in 2022-23 and missed the playoffs entirely.

But Kidd turned things around the following year, as he led Dallas to the Finals.

The 2024-25 season for the Mavs was memorable not for their play on the court but because of the blockbuster trade that saw franchise player Luka Dončić depart for the Los Angeles Lakers.

After another season of struggles in 2025-26, the Mavs and Kidd decided to go their separate ways. Kidd had four years remaining on his contract after signing extensions in each of the last two offseasons.

The good news for May is that the Mavs aren't exactly in the middle of a complete rebuild. While they've missed the playoffs in the last two years, they have one of the most promising young players in Cooper Flagg, as well as a veteran point guard in Kyrie Irving.
