Monday Recaps
Brazil Survive a Resolute Japan
Japan gave Brazil everything they could handle on Monday. It wasn't quite enough.
Brazil beat Japan 2-1 on Monday, and it was an Arsenal affair for the winners. Gabriel Magalhรฃes' pinpoint cross to Casemiro set up the equalizing goal in the 56th minute, while Gabriel Martinelli put away the winner in second-half stoppage time.
Brazil are now the second team to advance to the Round of 16.
Japan's Kaishu Sano put the underdogs ahead in the 29th minute with a fantastic run and strike, and it was well-deservedโJapan were the better overall team in the first half.
But Brazil regained some of their swagger in the second half, setting up Martinelli's moment of magic.
It was ultimately a fair resultโBrazil finished with an xG of 1.69 to just 0.23 for Japan while holding 69 percent of possession and putting seven shots on goal (two for Japan). But it certainly didn't come easy.
Brazil now await the winner of Norway vs. Cรดte d'Ivoire.
