Briscoe and MJF have no shortage of history together, so it didn't come as a huge surprise when Briscoe threw his proverbial hat in the ring as a potential challenger to MJF recently.
After MJF beat Darby Allin in the main event of Double or Nothing to regain the AEW world title, Briscoe confronted him on the ensuing episode of Dynamite and challenged MJF.
However, MJF refused to grant Briscoe a title match, opting instead to defend the championship against Rush.
Following MJF's successful defense, Briscoe spoke with AEW President Tony Khan and pitched him the idea of having the chance to earn a title match by facing MJF in a six-on-six steel cage match at Forbidden Door.
Khan granted Briscoe's request, which required both Briscoe and MJF to go on the recruiting trail in order to fill out their teams.
MJF quickly struck a deal with the villainous Don Callis Family, giving him Kevin Knight, Kyle Fletcher, Kazuchika Okada, Andrade El Idolo and Jake Doyle on his squad.
Meanwhile, Briscoe went with fellow Conglomeration members in Orange Cassidy, Roderick Strong and Kyle O'Reilly, as well as an MJF rival in Darby Allin and a Don Callis Family rival in Konosuke Takeshita.
That set the stage for 12 of the best wrestlers AEW has to offer to clash in a chaotic and hard-hitting steel cage match with huge stakes on the line.
Given that Briscoe beat him in a match at All Out last year, MJF undoubtedly wanted to avoid having to put the AEW World Championship on the line against him.
Briscoe and his team had other ideas, though, and the former ROH world champion and TNT champion is now one step away from becoming AEW world champ for the first time.
