US Open Golf Leaderboard 2026 Review of Top Scorecards and Player Stats on Day 1
Wyndham Clark took full advantage of the favorable afternoon conditions to take the lead after one day of play at the 2026 U.S. Open.
Clark shot six-under on the first 16 holes of his round before play was stopped due to darkness. He owns a four-shot lead over a collection of golfers that includes Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Clark and a handful of the other leaders have to come back on Friday morning to finish the opening round. The first round was delayed due to weather early on Thursday morning.
Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg and Scottie Scheffler made the best of the brutal conditions from the morning wave of tee times.
McIlroy and Aberg are only a few shots back of Clark, while Scheffler should rebound from a tough day in better weather on Friday.

Wyndham Clark Opens Up Sizable Advantage
1 of 3
Wyndham Clark set out on a blistering run of birdies during his first 16 holes.
Clark opened with back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes. He finished the back nine, which were his first nine holes of the day, with a birdie on No. 18.
Clark then caught fire on the front nine with birdies on the third and fourth holes and an eagle on the fifth. That run came right after a bogey on the second hole.
He completed his Thursday with a lovely up-and-down from the bunker on No. 7 to save par.
Clark has two holes remaining on Friday before he flips over to the second round.
He's opened up a sizable gap at a course in Shinnecock Hills that can be difficult to make birdies at.
It's still very early, but Clark's put himself in a wonderful position to claim his second major title.
Rory McIlroy, Ludvig Aberg Produce Strong Rounds From Early Tee Times
2 of 3
Rory McIlroy and Ludvig Aberg survived the early wave with a pair of one-under 69s.
McIlroy and Aberg made the best of the brutal early conditions to hang within a few shots of the lead created by the players in the afternoon wave.
McIlroy surged to the top of the leaderboard early with birdies on the 11th and 12th holes.
He gave two shots back to the course on the back nine, but then rallied with a birdie on the third and a rare eagle on the par-five fifth.
Unfortunately for McIlroy, he gave two more shots back to the course with bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes.
Aberg was more consistent with three birdies, two bogeys and 13 pars.
The consistency displayed by the Swede is a good sign for the week. Aberg has been in the mix at a quite a few majors in his young career, and on Thursday, he proved that he deal with the toughest of conditions.
McIlroy had a more up-and-down round, but his shot-making was on point on a few holes. That itself is a strong sign for how McIlroy could perform in lighter conditions over the next three rounds.
Scottie Scheffler Battles to Shoot 72
3 of 3
Scottie Scheffler battled to shoot a two-over 72 from Thursday's morning session.
Scheffler had the toughest time on the front nine with two bogeys and a double bogey at No. 9.
The back nine treated Scheffler better, as he rolled in three birdies, including one on the par-three 17th.
Scheffler still produced a pair of bogeys on the back nine, but he rebounded much better from his mistakes on the second nine.
A 72 in brutal conditions actually isn't a bad score for Scheffler. He's only a few shots back of the leaders and can make a push on Friday in much more favorable weatherr.
