Recaps
France 3, Senegal 1
France came into the World Cup as a co-favorite alongside Spain, but its first match wasn't exactly a cakewalk.
Senegal stayed in the match until the final minutes, showing promise of a potentially strong showing at the World Cup.
France was held scoreless through the first half, but star forward Kylian Mbappรฉย got his country on the board in the 66th minute off an assist from Michael Olise.
The goal for Mbappรฉ was his 13th career World Cup goal, and it tied him for the most goals in France's history.
Senegal continued to threaten for a bit, but Bradley Barcola gave France its second goal to just about put it away in the 82nd minute.
Senegal put a bit of pressure back on France with a goal in added time, but another goal from Mbappรฉ gave France some more insurance in the final moments. Mbappรฉ's second goal made him France's all-time goal scorer.
France will be back in action on Monday against Iraq, while Senegal will face Norway next.
Norway 4, Iraq 1
Back in the World Cup for the first time since 1998, Norway started its run strong.
Manchester City star Erling Haaland got things started for Norway, scoring his first-ever World Cup goal from close range in the 29th minute.
Iraq answered shortly after when Aymen Hussein found the back of the net in the 39th minute, but Haaland secured the brace just moments later to give Norway a 2-1 lead.
Both offenses went silent for the remainder of the first half and for much of the second half, but Norway added some insurance when Leo รstigรฅrdย scored a header in the 76th minute.
Norway appeared to be trying to get Haaland the hat trick in the final minutes of added time, but chaos off a cross led to an own goal for Iraq.
After its tremendous start to the World Cup, Norway will now get a matchup against Senegal on Monday.
Argentina 3, Algeria 0
Lionel Messi and Argentina picked up right where they left off after winning the World Cup in 2022.
The 38-year-old Messi notched a hat trick to set the tone for what should be another special World Cup for the Argentinian legend.
Both teams had goals called back for offside to start the match, but Messi scored his first goal of the night in the 17th minute to get the early edge.
His second goal came in the 60th minute when he scored one off the gloves of Algeria's keeper.
In the 76th minute, Messi secured his first hat trick in a World Cup game. The goal also tied him with Miroslav Klose for the most goals in Men's FIFA World Cup history, with 16.
If Messi and Argentina's opening performance is any indication of how the World Cup is going to go for them, they could be on their way to another final.
Argentina will be back on the pitch on Monday when it faces Austria.
Austria 3, Jordan 1
Jordan did its best to hold onto a draw in its first-ever World Cup match but faded at the end as Austria prevailed 3-1.
Werder Bremen midfielder Romano Schmid unleashed a thunderous effort from outside of the box to put Austria up in the 21st minute.
Ali Olwan carved out his place in world football history as he scored Jordan's first World Cup goal in the 50th minute. Cutting in from the left, he curled his shot in off the far post.
Jordan netted the next goal as well, only it happened to be on the wrong end of the pitch. Center back Yazan Al-Arab beat his own goalkeeper off an Austrian corner in the 76th minute.
Having come on as a substitute to start the second half, Red Star Belgrade striker Marko Arnautoviฤ put the finishing touches on the match in the 12th minute of stoppage time.
Austria was awarded a penalty after a video review, and it's all-time goalscorer sent the goalkeeper the wrong way.
With tougher tests ahead in the group, this was a match Austria needed to win, and Ralf Rangnick's squad achieved just that.
