Projecting the Top D-Lines for the 2026 CFB Season

David KenyonJun 18, 2026

Chaos, havoc, disruption. Perhaps you have a preferred word, but the best defensive lines in college football love all three.

Whether it's sacking a quarterback or taking down running backs behind the line of scrimmage, an elite defensive front can be overwhelming. Negative plays—and even simply incomplete passes—help a team control a game.

And the strongest units may be the backbone of a championship contender.

The choices are subjective but consider past production (including transfers) and personal expectations for the 2026 season.

Offseason Projection Series

Secondaries

Miami Hurricanes

1 of 8
College Football Playoff Quarterfinal - Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic: Miami v Ohio State
Ahmad Moten

For good reason, Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor garnered most of the attention as game-wreckers off the edge last season.

Yes, they're now in the NFL. But this is no rebuild for the Hurricanes, who return most everyone else who complemented the standout duo—led by second-team All-ACC defensive tackle Ahmad Moten.

Justin Scott played a key role alongside Moten at tackle, while Armondo Blount and Marquise Lightfoot held rotational roles. Blount offered versatility to kick inside for passing-down situations, as well.

Miami also reinforced the edge in the portal, landing second-team All-SEC selection Damon Wilson II from Missouri. He notched 9.5 sacks last year.

Factor in transfer D-tackles Keona Davis and Jarquez Carter with the hoped emergence of edge-rusher Hayden Lowe, and the 'Canes are stacked up front.

Michigan Wolverines

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: SEP 20 Michigan at Nebraska
Dominic Nichols

Not only is Michigan adapting to Kyle Whittingham's coaching, the defense is working on replacing a senior-heavy unit.

But there's a whole lot of optimism about this D-line.

Without question, the main reason is Utah transfer John Henry Daley. He racked up 17.5 tackles for loss (11.5 sacks) and garnered second-team AP All-American honors last season, then followed Whittingham to Ann Arbor.

Edge-rusher Cameron Brandt is back, along with Dominic Nichols—who made 5.5 TFLs in a limited role. Trey Pierce is a returning starter at tackle, Enow Etta was a regularly used backup and Utah transfer Jonah Lea'ea bolsters the interior.

Although a question-filled offense will determine U-M's ceiling, this is a strong foundation for the opposite side of the ball.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

3 of 8
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: OCT 04 Boise State at Notre Dame
Boubacar Traore

Ho-hum, another day, another Notre Dame appearance on these lists.

Nevertheless, it's a deserved spot for the Fighting Irish. They might not end up producing the gaudiest stats in the country, but running lanes will not be easily found against this front.

The flashy name is edge-rusher Boubacar Traore, who tallied 10 stops for loss in 2025. The rest of the group—from Elijah Hughes, Jason Onye and transfers Francis Brewu and Tionne Gray at tackle to Bryce Young and Alabama transfer Keon Keeley at end/edge—is flush with impactful players.

What the Irish seemingly lack in high-end playmaking potential, at least beyond Traore, they atone for in what should be rock-solid depth.

Oklahoma Sooners

4 of 8
Missouri v Oklahoma
Taylor Wein

Oklahoma, on the other hand, should put up exciting numbers.

Last season, the Sooners led the country with 9.4 tackles for loss as this defense led a resurgent year—all the way to the College Football Playoff.

Standout rusher R Mason Thomas is gone, but OU brings back second-team All-SEC selection Taylor Wein. He collected a team-high 15 stops in the backfield, while D-tackle David Stone chipped in eight more.

Rising into elevated roles will be edges Adepoju Adebawore and Danny Okoye, plus tackle Jayden Jackson. UTSA transfer Kenny Ozowalu and Georgia State transfer Bishop Thomas will impact the rotation, as well.

Once again, Oklahoma will be a nightmare to block.

Ole Miss Rebels

5 of 8
Tulane v Ole Miss
Suntarine Perkins

Likely one of the more divisive teams in preseason projections, Ole Miss has a transfer-infused roster—what's new—needing to learn each other quickly.

One major exception? The core of this defensive line.

Edge-rusher Suntarine Perkins and tackle Will Echoles have All-SEC recognition on their résumés, and edge Kam Franklin amassed 69 tackles (9.0 for loss) last season. That trifecta is set to guide the Rebels for another year.

As for those transfers, Ole Miss is banking on Jeheim Oatis (Colorado) and Michai Boireau (Florida) to disrupt the middle alongside Echoles. Jonathan Maldonado (Nevada) had nine TFLs on the edge in 2025, while Blake Purchase (Oregon) and Jordan Renaud (Alabama) offer promising depth.

As long as Perkins, Echoles and Franklin perform close to their expectations, Ole Miss will be a fearsome group up front.

Oregon Ducks

6 of 8
COLLEGE FOOTBALL: JAN 01 College Football Playoff Quarterfinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl Oregon vs Texas Tech
Teitum Tuioti

Loaded.

In a word, that's the summary of the defensive line at Oregon—which, on paper, returns the best unit in the country.

Edge-rushers Teitum Tuioti and Matayo Uiagalelei posted 16.0 and 9.5 tackles for loss, respectively, last season. All-Big Ten tackles Bear Alexander and A'Mauri Washington clogged the interior as Oregon ceded just 3.4 yards per carry.

As if returning four quality starters isn't enough, the Ducks have depth on the edge in Nasir Wyatt and 5-star freshman Anthony Jones Jr., too. Transfer D-tackle D'Antre Robinson had 39 stops for North Carolina last season.

Truly, anything less than another trip to the College Football Playoff would be a significant letdown for Oregon in 2026.

Texas Longhorns

7 of 8
San Jose State v Texas
Colin Simmons

Texas boasts one of the absolute best players in the country, and we're not talking about who Arch Manning may become.

No, that standout is edge-rusher Colin Simmons. As a freshman, he accumulated 14 tackles for loss while posting nine sacks. Simmons bumped those totals to 15.5 and 12, respectively, en route to first-team All-SEC honors in 2025.

Simmons is the game-wrecker for Texas. But there's more in this cupboard.

While the edge-rushing rotation is a work in progress, expect Lance Jackson, Brad Spence, Zina Umeozulu and Colton Vasek all to contribute.

On the interior, Arkansas transfer Ian Geffrard joins returning D-tackles Hero Kanu, Alex January and Maraad Watson. Justus Terry, a 5-star prospect in the 2025 cycle, may carve out a versatile role between end and tackle, as well.

Texas has many options to surround Simmons, an All-American-level disruptor.

Texas Tech Red Raiders

8 of 8
Oklahoma State v Texas Tech
A.J. Holmes Jr.

Since the Brendan Sorsby saga is finally over, Texas Tech knows its outlook in 2026. And that is a defensive-driven team.

Whereas the Red Raiders' secondary is full of returning players, though, the line is a transfer-heavy unit. The lone exception is A.J. Holmes Jr., a third-team All-Big 12 selection who tallied nine stops for loss in 2025.

Otherwise, this is a group of very talented newcomers.

Texas Tech flexed its financial muscle, bringing in three accomplished edge-rushers. Trey White earned first-team All-Mountain West at San Diego State, Adam Trick earned first-team All-MAC for Miami (Ohio) and Jamond Mathis followed with second-team All-MAC honors at Kent State.

On the interior, Mateen Ibirogba (Wake Forest), Bryce Butler (Washington) and second-team All-MAC pick Julien Laventure (Akron) add a serious wave of experience.

This is a hard reset in the trenches, yet Tech should be terrific anyway.
