Projecting the Top Secondaries for the 2026 CFB Season

David KenyonJun 2, 2026

While the importance of winning at the line of scrimmage remains, the evolution of college football has placed a greater importance on excellence in the secondary.

Against some teams, a defense must be prepared to handle 40-plus pass attempts. Boasting a blend of high-end talent and quality depth has never been more necessary, especially with an ever-expanding championship format in place.

In all likelihood, most of the best defensive backfields in the country will be found at familiar programs, too.

The choices are subjective but consider past production (including transfers) and personal expectations for the 2026 season.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Eastern Illinois v Alabama
Bray Hubbard

As the 2025 season ended, Alabama seemed to have a retooling on the horizon with a few NFL-worthy defensive backs.

The good news? Two of them returned.

Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb electing to forgo the professional route ensured the Crimson Tide keep an experienced duo at safety. Zavier Mincey, who held a regular role behind them, is back in Tuscaloosa, too.

At corner, Zabien Brown and Dijon Lee Jr. are returning starters, while Red Morgan is a promising nickelback. Carmelo O'Neal, a 6'4" transfer from Mercer, adds experienced depth to the group.

Bama's aim at a bounce-back season is well-supported by its secondary.

Georgia Bulldogs

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 01 Georgia vs Florida

Will the UGA defense return to "elite" status in 2026?

Look, in a down season, the Dawgsโ€”who ranked seventh nationally against the runโ€”finished 38th in yards allowed per pass attempt. They had an identical mark in 2024, ending 35th in the country. This is hardly a disaster.

Georgia has national title aspirations, though, and a stronger secondary is essential to reaching that goal.

The headliner is KJ Bolden, a second-team All-SEC safety last year. Ellis Robinson IV and Demello Jones are locked-in corners, and Clemson transfer Khalil Barnesโ€”an honorable mention All-ACC pickโ€”is poised to start at nickel. Rasean Dinkins may round out this encouraging first-string unit.

Georgia also found experienced depth in the portal, landing safety JaMarley Riddle and cornerbacks Braylon Conley and Gentry Williams.

Miami Hurricanes

Bryce Fitzgerald

Part of the reason for Miami's ascent to national contention in 2025 is that a revamped secondary turned a glaring weakness into a major strength.

And most of that production is coming back.

Yes, the 'Canes must replace second-team All-ACC players in nickelback Keionte Scott and safety Jakobe Thomas. However, they have Omar Thorntonโ€”who posted 82 tackles for Boston College last yearโ€”and Freshman All-American safety Bryce Fitzgerald, respectively, in line to step up.

Along with bringing back safety Zechariah Poyser, the cornerback group of Xavier Lucas, OJ Frederique Jr., Ethan O'Connor and Damari Brown is entirely intact. They all played significant roles when healthy last season.

If either Dylan Day or true freshman JJ Dunnigan carves out a role at safety, Miami would have extensive depth in a talent-filled secondary.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 22 Syracuse at Notre Dame
Leonard Moore

Expectations could hardly be higher for Notre Dame's secondary.

That's the short-and-sweet version, but it's also a logical one. Last year's group yielded a modest 6.2 yards per attempt with 14 touchdowns allowed to 21 interceptions, and a strong majority of those contributors are back.

Leonard Moore is a superstar corner. Opposite him should be Colorado transfer DJ McKinney, whose arrival has nudged Christian Gray to nickel. At safety, Adon Shuler and Tae Johnson both collected at least 48 tackles last season and have a knack for creating a chance for turnovers, be that fumbles or interceptions.

As if that's not enough, the Irish have notable depth in corners Mark Zackery IV, Michigan transfer Jayden Sanders and Dallas Golden plus safety Luke Talich.

There's no shortage of talent available in ND's coverage unit.

Ohio State Buckeyes

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: NOV 15 UCLA at Ohio State
Jermaine Mathews Jr.

Last season, Ohio State surrendered the lowest yards per attempt in the country. The dynamic pass-rushing group helped out the secondary, and sticky coverage aided the front seven.

While the personnel will be different in 2026, that intent remains.

The returners are cornerback Jermaine Mathews Jr. and Jaylen McClain, both third-team All-Big Ten selections (by coaches and media, respectively). Devin Sanchez is rising to a starting job after holding a rotational spot as a true freshman, and Leroy Roker has that upside at safety.

Ohio State plucked a few impact transfers out of the portal, too. Both nickel/corner Earl Little Jr. and safety Terry Moore are recent All-ACC selections, while Dominick Kelly and Cam Calhoun can contribute right away at corner.

The unit might not be quite as good as 2025's. It should still be fantastic.

Oregon Ducks

6 of 7
College Football Playoff Quarterfinal - Capital One Orange Bowl: Oregon v Texas Tech
Brandon Finney Jr.

Although a trip to the College Football Playoff ended in sour fashion (again), Oregon put together a quality 2025 season with a great secondary.

All-American safety Dillon Thieneman is gone, but the Ducks plucked All-Big Ten selection Koi Perich from Minnesota to replace him. He'll roam the back end alongside Aaron Flowers, who amassed 70 tackles as a redshirt freshman.

The cornerback group is led by Brandon Finney Jr., an All-Big Ten honoree in his true freshman campaign. Ify Obidegwu is also a returning starter, and Baylor transfer Carl Williams IV can slide into the nickel role immediately.

Within the reserve ranks, Oregon has options.

Ohio State transfer Aaron Scott Jr. will contribute at corner, Peyton Woodyard is back at safety. Recent top-50 recruits, such as cornerback Na'eem Offord and safeties Trey McNutt and Jett Washington, can be leading depth pieces.

In the chase for that elusive national championship, Oregon shouldn't have to worry about its coverage unit.

Texas Tech Red Raiders

7 of 7
Kent State v Texas Tech
Brice Pollock

Continuity is not always the answer.

Texas Tech, among the country's most active programs in the transfer portal, would be the first to agree. But in this particular case, the Red Raiders are leaning on a whole lot of returning playersโ€”and for good reason.

Other than safety Cole Wisniewski and two depth corners, everyone else is back.

The lineup is set to feature first-team All-Big 12 cornerback Brice Pollock, along with corner Amier Boyd and safety Brenden Jordan. (John Curry is arguably a linebacker yet a hybrid/nickel-type presence. Either way, he's awesome.)

Malik Esquerra, a rotational piece in 2025, is battling Peyton Morgan to start at safety. The runner-up in that competition will be key depth, joining UTSA transfer Davin Martin and Ashton Hampton in that category.

The offense has a Brendan Sorsby-sized issue to address at quarterback, but there aren't many questions about this secondary.
