Jose Mourinho Criticises Chelsea Physio Eva Carneiro for Treating Hazard
Jose Mourinho aimed a dig at Chelsea's physio Eva Carneiro after Chelsea's 2-2 draw with Swansea on the opening day of the Premier League season.
Mourinho, speaking at his post-match press conference, indicated he was unhappy with "my medical staff" after Carneiro had tried to treat Eden Hazard late on for an injury. The Blues, already down to 10 men after Thibaut Courtois' red card, were then left short in stoppage time as they tried to defend.
In quotes relayed by the Daily Telegraph, Mourinho said:
"I wasn't happy with my medical staff because even if you are a medical doctor or secretary on the bench, you have to understand the game.
If you go to the pitch to assist a player, then you must be sure that a player has a serious problem. I was sure that Eden didn't have a serious problem. He had a knock and was very tired.
My medical department left me with eight fit outfield players in a counter attack after a set piece and we were worried we didn't have enough players left.
"
The draw was a disappointing start to the season for a disjointed Chelsea, but Mourinho declined to speak on the refereeing—replays indicated Courtois' red card challenge, for instance, might have taken place just outside the box.
Update, August 10: Eva Carneiro has thanked fans for their messages of support in a message on Facebook.
The physio's verified page contained a message that again, while not explicitly acknowledging Mourinho's comments, appears to be linked to the weekend's incident.
