Brian Kelly Shaded by Ed Orgeron over Infamous Southern Accent Video After Taking LSU Job
After accepting a position on Lane Kiffin's staff at LSU this week, former LSU head football coach Ed Orgeron gave his take Friday on Brian Kelly's ill-fated tenure at the school.
During an appearance on Pardon My Take (h/t On3.com's Daniel Hager), Orgeron specifically discussed the first time Kelly addressed the LSU fanbase during halftime of a Tigers basketball game in December 2021.

Kelly, who is from Massachusetts, seemed to speak with a fake southern accent, making him the butt of jokes for years to come. Orgeron claimed right then and there that he knew Kelly was doomed, saying, "It's over. You ain't got a chance. You ain't got a chance, man. Not only did the fans see it, the players saw that. And they're like… hmm. One of the things is that players have to trust you. You have to be who you are. If you try and be somebody that you ain't, they're going to smell it right away."
After parts of four seasons at the helm, Kelly was fired eight games into the 2025 season. He posted an overall record of 34-14 at LSU, failing to lead the Tigers to an SEC title or a College Football Playoff berth.
Authenticity was never an issue for Orgeron during his time as the head coach at LSU from 2016 to 2021.
Orgeron was born and raised in Louisiana, and his unmistakable Louisiana accent is among his trademark characteristics.
He remains a beloved figure at LSU, and it certainly doesn't hurt that he led the Tigers to a perfect 15-0 record and a national championship in 2019, marking one of the greatest seasons in college football history.
Kiffin was tabbed to replace Kelly at the end of the 2025 college football regular season in hopes that he can return the Tigers to the glory that Orgeron once achieved.
Coach O will be along for the ride as well after it was announced Wednesday that he will be a special assistant to recruiting and defense at LSU in 2026.
Although it has ties to the past thanks to Orgeron's return, a new era in LSU football is set to begin this coming season, and it will kick off on Sept. 5 when LSU hosts Clemson.
