Rousey, 39, is the considerable favorite and that shouldn't come as a surprise. The former UFC champion would have likely been a heavy favorite had the two met in their primes and she's five years younger than the 44-year-old Carano.
Rousey hasn't fought since December 2016, when she came up short in a title fight against Amanda Nunes. After starting off a perfect 12-0 and taking the UFC by storm, she dropped back-to-back title fights and walked away.
Now, she's looking to write a new final chapter to her story.
"There was kind of like a cascade of things that led to it, but largely I wanted to rewrite my own ending in MMA," Rousey said of her reasons for coming back, per Alexander K. Lee of MMA Fighting. "It was just unfinished. I never formally retired. Dana said I retired and I hadn't fought in, like, 10 years, so I think I needed everyone to kind of give up on me coming back before I knew I was coming back just for me."
Carano's career was marked by a similar rapid ascent and even more rapid fall. She was involved in several groundbreaking fights, including the first main event on Showtime, first women's fight on live television and Nevada's first sanctioned women's MMA fight.
She racked up seven wins before fighting Cris Cyborg in the first main event on Showtime. However, Cyborg dominated their fight, winning by TKO at 4:59 in the first round.
Carano hung up the gloves after the 2009 fight and pursued acting instead.
She's excited to return back to her fighting roots.
"I get to revive and reveal the fighting side of me because a lot of people either forgot or weren't around the last time I fought," Carano told Andreas Hale of ESPN. "I've heard people say Ronda Rousey is fighting the girl from 'The Mandalorian.' No, I had a whole life that opened the doors to those movie opportunities, and it was me being a fighter, a genuine fighter who broke a lot of barriers."
Rousey's aggressive judo attack and signature armbar are weapons that most likely haven't faded with age. Those wheelhouse techniques aren't likely to be gone after years of performing in the WWE.
Carano, meanwhile, only ever had one submission in her career and never fought anyone as dangerous as Rousey, outside of Cyborg.
It's likely that we get one more highlight reel submission from Rousey.
