Bron Breakker's Rise to the Top of WWE Starts at Backlash vs. Seth Rollins
The 2026 installment of WWE Backlash boasts a stacked card on paper, but Bron Breakker vs. Seth Rollins is easily the most important of all the advertised matches.
A contest one year in the making, Breakker vs. Rollins appeared to be the direction for WrestleMania 42 before injuries to both men caused plans to shift significantly.
Now the stage is set for them to take their feud to the next level when they wage war at Backlash on Saturday.
More importantly, this is Breakker's chance to cement himself as a fixture at the main event level.
The second-generation star's ascent has been questionably handled over the last two years. Although he is undeniably a future world champion, an argument can be made that he should have already reached those heights by now.
Backlash must be where WWE begins to rebuild Breakker and get his rise to the top of the card back on track.
He's Suffered Enough Setbacks So Far

Breakker joining Rollins to form The Vision on last year's post-WrestleMania Raw should have served as the setup to his long-awaited run in the main event scene, after spending the year dominating the midcard and winning the Intercontinental Championship twice.
Although it put him and Bronson Reed at the forefront of Raw for the remainder of 2025, Rollins was consistently presented as the focal point.
Breakker racked up more wins than losses, but it hardly felt like his career was accelerating at the rate it should have been.
Rollins went down with an injury in October and WWE failed to capitalize on Breakker's betrayal of him. He went on to win WarGames at Survivor Series but failed to dethrone CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship and was immediately eliminated from the men's Royal Rumble match.
Having to undergo emergency hernia surgery put him out of action through WrestleMania 42, so only now is his rivalry with Rollins fully getting underway.
Breakker needs a major boost in the worst way, and suffering another setback in the form of a loss to Rollins at Backlash would ruin whatever momentum he's managed to build for himself since returning at WrestleMania in April.
Rollins Can Easily Afford Another Loss
2 of 5
Seth Rollins is one of the most established stars on the entire WWE roster. He hardly has anything to lose at this point and is among an elite few on the current roster that will always be over with the audience no matter what.
Despite his defeat to Gunther at WrestleMania (which came after an assist from the returning Breakker), Rollins can easily afford to lose to Breakker at Backlash.
There really isn't any other outcome that would make sense. Sure, Breakker could come up short and have a strong showing, but doing that would simply send the message that he's not on Rollins' level.
Not only that, Rollins has nothing to gain from beating Breakker at Backlash. He teased rekindling his rivalry with Roman Reigns on Raw this week, but there's no need for them to run it back anytime soon.
The goal should be to ultimately elevate Breakker, and that can't happen if he loses in his first bout back from being sidelined.
Breakker Should Already Be World Champion
3 of 5
Truth be told, there's no reason why Breakker shouldn't have already won a world title by now.
While it would have been too soon for him to hold world title gold when he first got called up to the main roster in 2024, he was ready to be moved into the main event coming out of WrestleMania last year. Instead, he acted as backup for Rollins in The Vision and was relegated to the background.
As noted, WWE didn't strike when the iron was hot with him coming off his vicious attack on the injured Rollins in October.
The Visionary vacating the World Heavyweight Championship should have been the path to him taking the title and running Raw in Rollins' absence.
WWE instead doubled down on Breakker's bad booking by having him lose to CM Punk in a World Heavyweight Championship main event on the first Raw of 2026. Reigns is now in possession of the belt and will likely lose it to Oba Femi by SummerSlam.
This rivalry with Rollins is merely holding Breakker back from where he belongs.
Outgrowing The Vision
4 of 5
Initially, The Vision could have been a vehicle to get Breakker to the top of the card and have him benefit from working alongside Rollins and Paul Heyman.
However, the group came together one year too late.
By the time he was with them, he didn't need them. Breakker was gradually getting over with the audience as a babyface during his second stint as intercontinental champion, only to turn heel, link up with Rollins and start from scratch again.
In the end, taking orders from Rollins didn't do him any favors, and even now, he isn't gaining anything from having Heyman as his manager. Breakker has cut his own promos in recent weeks and more than held his own on the mic.
If anything, The Vision is an anchor for Breakker right now, especially with Bronson Reed out injured for the foreseeable future. As a whole, the group has been a failure, and if Logan Paul and Austin Theory aren't going to add to his act in any meaningful way, Breakker should be on his own.
Once he wraps up his rivalry with Rollins, the next step should be separating him from the faction and setting his sights back on world title gold.
Where Next for Breakker?
5 of 5
If and when Breakker beats Rollins at Backlash, it's safe to assume their feud will resume for at least a little while longer, even though The Badass is overdue for a push toward a top title.
The former WWE and world heavyweight champion is bound to keep him busy until the start of the summer, unless the endgame is being saved for SummerSlam on August 1-2. From there, Breakker should be back challenging for world championship gold.
If Oba Femi is earmarked to unseat Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship in the coming months, then Breakker shifting over to SmackDown and targeting whoever will be holding the Undisputed WWE Championship by then would be his best bet.
On Friday nights, Breakker can have fresh matchups with the likes of Cody Rhodes, Jacob Fatu, Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton and be booked as an unstoppable force. If he has no upward trajectory on Raw with Reigns, Rollins, Punk and Femi crowding the title picture, then SmackDown should be where he makes his mark.
How Breakker makes the most of this upcoming opportunity against Rollins at Backlash will determine whether he will fulfill his potential sometime this year or continue teetering on the cusp of greatness.
