Serge Gnabry to West Brom: Latest Loan Details, Comments and Reaction

Tim DanielsAug 7, 2015

West Bromwich Albion confirmed the arrival of Serge Gnabry on Friday, as the winger will spend the 2015-16 campaign at the Hawthorns on a season-long loan from Arsenal.

The Baggies announced the deal on their official site, as Gnabry talked about how getting a chance to play on a regular basis served as a key reason for accepting the move: "I'm very delighted by the move. I see the opportunity that I can play, it's a good club and I've heard good things. I'm very happy that I've signed here. I've got good impressions and I feel it's a good environment for me to play and also develop as a player."

Head coach Tony Pulis is hopeful the new addition will reach his potential during his time with the club.

"We're delighted to add Serge to our options," Pulis said. "He is a top player and he will bring us quality in certain areas of the pitch."

Gnabry, 20, joins a rebuilt West Brom attack that's also welcomed Rickie Lambert and James McClean so far in the summer transfer window.

The move represents an opportunity for the winger to find top form. He missed more than a year due to a serious knee injury and didn't receive any first-team playing time upon his return during the latter stages of last term.

Given the Gunners' attacking depth, it would have been difficult for Gnabry to get the consistent match time he needs to restart his development. Going out on loan was always the best option, and staying in the Premier League is going to help him acclimate to the style of play.

The German youth international should help provide a boost to a West Brom attack that ranked 16th in the Premier League last season. They found the net just 38 times, averaging exactly one goal per match, but a far more reliable back line kept them clear of the relegation battle.

Gnabry is known for his ability to push the pace on the outside. It's still going to take some time for him to reach peak match fitness after being out for so long, but the upside remains. Expect him to steadily improve as the campaign goes on and he gets more comfortable in his new surroundings.
