The 17-time world champion wrestled the final match of his illustrious career in December, losing to Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event by submission.
In 2024, Cena announced that 2025 would be his final year as an active wrestler, and he held true to his word by taking one final bow in front of the WWE Universe in December.
Cena had a highly eventful 2025, as he shockingly turned heel, beat Cody Rhodes for the WWE Championship in the main event of WrestleMania 41, reverted back to babyface, dropped the title back to Rhodes and even held the Intercontinental Championship for a brief period of time.
The 48-year-old went out in a way most wouldn't have expected by tapping out to Gunther, marking the first time he had submitted in a match since 2004.
While many fans were disappointed with the conclusion, as evidenced by the live crowd in Washington, D.C., audibly booing, Cena ultimately went out on his own terms.
Cena has made it clear that he will never wrestle again, but he will continue to be part of the WWE family for years to come.
Prior to his retirement, Cena told Tom Rinaldi of Fox Sports (h/t SI.com's Joe Baiamonte) that he signed a new, five-year contract with WWE to serve as an ambassador.
Regarding the new role, Cena said, "Maybe ambassadorship comes with letting more people know to watch this, which was my goal in the first place, and maybe mentorship to talent I wouldn't spend time with where I can sit and be like, 'Who are you really? How can I get the rapping moment on the bus? I want that guy or girl on TV.' I'm looking forward to that stuff."
That comment suggested Cena would be transitioning into a behind-the-scenes role, but he will be back in front of the camera for WrestleMania 42 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on April 18 and 19.
It is nothing new for a legendary Superstar to host WrestleMania, as The Rock did it back in 2011. Given Cena's status as a crossover star in the worlds of pro wrestling and Hollywood acting, he is a sensible choice for the job this time around.
