Rowdy Roddy Piper Dies at 61
Just one month after the untimely passing of the American Dream Dusty Rhodes, the wrestling business lost another legend, as Rowdy Roddy Piper died at the age of 61. Piper, who main evented the very first WrestleMania in a tag team match against Hulk Hogan and Mr. T, was heralded by many as one of the greatest villains of all time.
Question on Everybody's Mind: What Is Hot Rod's Lasting Legacy?
There is often controversy when someone gets inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame with regard to whether they are deserving, but Piper is a Hall of Famer in every sense of the term. He was one of the greatest talkers to ever hold microphone, and he mastered the art of being a heel. In fact, it can be argued WWE would never have been such a massive success without the presence of Piper as the foil to Hulkamania leading up to the inaugural WrestleMania.
As great as Piper was as a heel, he proved to be a fantastic face later in his career. He was highly entertaining as an announcer, and he had one of the greatest Intercontinental Championship matches in WrestleMania history against Bret Hart at WrestleMania VIII.
Following a fruitful run in WCW during the late 1990s, Piper continued to be involved with the wrestling business, periodically hosting his entertaining Piper's Pit segments on WWE programming. He also appeared on the highly popular reality series Legends' House on WWE Network. Piper undoubtedly died far too young, but he essentially did it all in the sport of professional wrestling.
Ring Rust Radio's Take
Many of today's wrestlers have been inspired by those who came before them, and for those who are strong in terms of promos, Piper is usually right near the top of that list.
He had an uncanny ability to not only get under the skin of protagonists and their fans, but he was also capable of selling big matches on the mic as well. That art is lost at times during the current era of professional wrestling, but those who study Piper and his tendencies can help keep it alive.
Perhaps the one and only omission on Piper's resume is the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, although he wrestled during a time when heels rarely won the company's top prize. He would have been a multi-time world champion in another era, but he ultimately proved to be a transcendent star who didn't need titles to be a legend.
Piper is one of the most iconic figures to ever set foot inside a wrestling ring, and his impact on the business will continue to be felt for many years to come.
Seth Rollins Challenges John Cena to SummerSlam Match
One week after Seth Rollins broke John Cena's nose during a match for the United States Championship, the WWE world heavyweight champion called out the leader of the Cenation. While Cena wasn't present at Raw, the WWE Universe awaits his decision, as the face of the Authority challenged him to a match at SummerSlam with both the world and U.S. titles on the line.
Question on Everybody's Mind: How Will This Match Play Out?
It is easy to be apprehensive about Cena being put back in the world title scene, considering how good he has been for the midcard, but the fact both titles will be up for grabs at SummerSlam makes for a highly intriguing situation. As difficult as it is to envision either Superstar leaving the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, with both titles in tow, it is a distinct possibility.
At the same time, WWE could easily book its way out of a clean decision through some type of disqualification or count-out or perhaps even interference of some kind. As things stand, neither Cena nor Rollins needs the title the other is holding. At the same time, neither necessarily needs to lose his title either.
Even though Cena and Rollins have locked horns many times over the past year, it's tough to not be at least somewhat interested about where this angle could be going.
Ring Rust Radio's Take
Rollins lost via submission when he and Cena met a couple weeks ago, so there is understandably some concern among Rollins fans that he may fall to Cena at SummerSlam as well.
The possibility of Cena winning a big match can never be totally discounted since it has happened so many times over the years, but based on how entertaining he has made the United States Championship scene with his open challenges, it is far more likely WWE will maintain the status quo in that regard.
The easiest way to keep either Rollins or Cena from winning both belts is interference, and that may very well come from Money in the Bank contract holder Sheamus. WWE hasn't done much with the Celtic Warrior in terms of teasing a cash-in, so SummerSlam would be the perfect time to make it happen. He is a definite threat to cash in his contract and lose since he hasn't been built as a top star as of late, but don't be surprised if he cashes in successfully and is ultimately revealed to be part of the Authority.

RRR Interview with AAA's Rey Mysterio
Rey Mysterio has done it all over the course of his wrestling career as a former WWE World Heavyweight champion and a star in both WCW and ECW, and he has now gone back to his roots. The diminutive luchador is set to main event AAA's Triplemania 23 Sunday, and he stopped by Ring Rust Radio to discuss the event, as well as his future in the business.
Question on Everybody's Mind: What's Next for Mysterio?
Most wrestlers are beginning to wind down their careers at 40 years of age, but Mysterio is instead working toward one of the biggest matches of his life, as he will face Myzteziz in the top match at Triplemania 23. Myzteziz formerly worked as Sin Cara in WWE, and though there constant rumors he and Mysterio would lock horns there, it never happened.
The dream encounter is finally coming to fruition at Triplemania, though, and Mysterio couldn't be more excited:
"Well, that match between us is going to a legacy defining match. There is a lot of animosity and egos that are going to come into play that night. I have to point out that this match was made for the fans by the fans. The fans were the No. 1 critiques on who is better. Rey Mysterio or Myzteziz.
At one point, I left Mexico to continue my career globally and a new star came about. He is known now as Myzteziz, but back then he was known as Mistico and then Sin Cara when he joined WWE. I would have to say the fans, in their eyes, see a lot of similarities between us. We even tagged at one point in WWE and now here we are against each other thanks to the fans.
"
Mysterio and Myzteziz are two of the most accomplished luchadores to ever grace a wrestling ring, and they both have absolutely massive followings, not only in Mexico but across the world.
Since AAA's Triplemania 23 will be available on pay-per-view in Mexico, the United States and Canada, fans throughout North America will have an opportunity to witness what could turn out to be the match of the year.
Ring Rust Radio's Take
While Mysterio's immediate future is very much rooted in AAA, wrestling fans are constantly looking ahead. Everyone wants to know what the master of the 619's next move will be, and it is clear Mysterio has no shortage of possibilities.
Not only has Mysterio expressed a willingness to return to WWE at some point down the line if the situation is right, he also has a great deal of admiration for El Rey Network's Lucha Underground:
"I'm a big fan of their product, and I watch it on occasion. They are doing a wonderful job, and I think it's great that they give an opportunity to the future talent of AAA. I sit down and think if we had that type of promotion going on when AAA was filled with Psychosis, Juventud [Guerrera], [La] Parka, Pentagon, Konnan, then lucha libre would have been introduced years ago to the United States.
Unfortunately, it didn't happen, but I think everything has its time to be exposed, and now it has happened for Lucha Underground. I think if the time is right and I am interested, I don't see why not. If the opportunity came to [go] back to the WWE with a 50-50 terms base, I would do that as well. It's good to know you have options and when the options come I will be the first to jump on it as long as it favors both parties involved.
"
There is plenty of uncertainty with regard to Lucha Underground because its first season recently came to an end and a second season hasn't yet been announced. The product shouldn't go by the wayside based on how entertaining it is, but nothing is guaranteed.
LU enthusiasts would undoubtedly love to see Mysterio in the temple at some point, but the ultimate underdog will be just fine regardless of what happens.
