New LeBron James Rumors Reveal 'Most Likely' Landing Spot for Lakers Star in 2026 NBA Free Agency

Adam WellsMar 4, 2026

As LeBron James tries to keep the Los Angeles Lakers out of the play-in tournament mix right now, there remains plenty of focus on where he might end up playing next season.

On Wednesday's episode of Get Up, ESPN's Tim MacMahon has added more fuel to a reunion with the Cleveland Cavaliers by citing them as the "most likely" landing spot for James this summer.

James is set to hit free agency after this season and there are a lot of questions about if he will finish his career in Los Angeles.

The Lakers do project to have enough cap space to sign a player to a max salary in the offseason, but they may not be inclined to offer James that much given that Austin Reaves can become a free agent by opting out of his contract. They will also want to build their roster around Luka Dončić since he's already their best player and 14 years younger than James.

Given that there's not expected to be a lot of cap space around the NBA in the offseason, particularly from ready-made title contenders that would appeal to James, ESPN's Brian Windhorst has suggested that he might have to take a "significant" pay cut on his next contract.

The Cavs, for instance, will likely have to give James Harden a new contract after acquiring him prior to the trade deadline. His current contract includes a player option for 2026-27 with a $13.3 million partial salary that becomes fully guaranteed at $42.3 million on July 11.

B/R's Greg Swartz has offered a scenario in which James signs a mid-level exception with the Cavs for $15 million or even potentially the vet minimum to potentially finish out his career back where it started.

Cleveland has an excellent roster foundation right now with Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley and Sam Merrill. The possibility of adding James into that mix would certainly make the Cavs arguably the most formidable offense in the NBA.

It would also give James the opportunity to go on a year-long retirement tour with the organization that originally drafted him into the league in 2003.

No one knows when James is going to retire, but the idea of a reunion with the Cavs would be a feel-good story that could definitely put a bow on arguably the greatest individual career in NBA history.
