Gameplay Impressions

Gamers familiar with franchises such as Animal Crossing, Dragon Quest Builders and Minecraft will feel right at home with Pokemon Pokopia. However, for gamers unfamiliar with those titles or Pokemon fans who haven't been interested in them before will experience a fantastic game with Pokemon Pokopia. The Pokemon element is a brilliant way to get gamers into the life-sim genre because for most gamers, there's an inherent connection to so many Pokemon featured in Pokopia. While Pokemon is the easy way to get somebody into the game, it's the compelling gameplay and intriguing story that will hook players.

Without diving much into the story, players take control of Ditto to uncover the mystery of why there are only Pokemon in the world and no humans. It is up to Ditto to restore communities across different towns with the help of other Pokemon. The mystery is constantly on top of mind and seemingly every action helps Ditto and all of the Pokemon inch closer to their goal of solving this mystery.

Along the way, there are clearly-defined objectives for Ditto to accomplish and this helps streamline Pokopia compared to other life-sim games that may feel too open-ended. While Pokopia can easily be a 'forever' game because there is simply so much to do and discover, it feels rewarding as the player to tackle specific objectives towards the overarching story without the pressure of needing to rush through.

As Ditto, players will learn recipes to craft items, such as crafting a campfire with sticks and stones to keep Pokemon warm at night, for example. Ditto will also meet specific Pokemon integral to story progression to learn specific moves in order to restore the community and create homes for Pokemon. For example, Ditto can learn water or cut techniques, plus enlist help from other Pokemon to accomplish tasks.

For Ditto, using these different techniques cost PP, which the player can exhaust if too many moves are performed. In order to replenish PP, Ditto can eat food such as berries, which can be acquired from trees. These items are so plentiful that the experience would've been better without having a PP meter at all since it's more tedious than fun to have to manage but this gameplay mechanic does evolve over time.

As for other Pokemon, specific Pokemon also have additional abilities, such as fire types having the ability to burn clay to make bricks to help craft buildings, which takes real-world time to complete. While some Pokemon may already appear when moving to a new section of the world, Ditto most often will find traces of undiscovered Pokemon to learn about their habitats so Ditto can create them to eventually spawn a new Pokemon. Some habitats can cause multiple types of Pokemon to appear, so it's intriguing to see exactly who will pop up. It is an absolute joy to see which Pokemon will appear next throughout the story or while exploring.

Even though there's story objectives to complete, interactions with Pokemon manage to feel unscripted, dynamic and natural. Pokemon feel lifelike as they interact with other Pokemon or go about their daily business independent of the player. They all have unique personalities with likes and dislikes, plus they often have unique dialogue. It's intriguing to interact with the different Pokemon to see what they'll say, what they're doing and what they're interested in. Gamers can even play mini-games with specific Pokemon, such as jump rope with Bulbasaur. It's a delight every time to see them and how they can help Ditto rebuild the world.

Quickly, there's a smooth and simple-to-follow tutorial system that makes this an accessible game for players of all ages. It is the perfect 'first' life-sim game for younger players or newer gamers, very much like the original Pokemon games that served as a brilliant introduction to RPG games. Naturally, there's a fantastic Pokedex to learn about dozens and dozens of Pokemon, which includes their statistics, abilities, likes and dislikes. It truly never gets old discovering new Pokemon, learning more about them and their personality through the Pokedex before seeing it unfold in real time in the world.

Speaking of the world itself, the map is massive with tons to discover. There is a constant sense of wonder and mystery, very similar to Donkey Kong Bananza in how the world can be manipulated to open new paths. It is not an exaggeration that there is always something to do and something to achieve or strive for as everything matters towards the overarching goal. Players can accomplish challenges to earn coins to purchase dozens of more items to help build out the world with better accessories and living conditions to improve the comfort level of different Pokemon, such as a bed or mirror for homes.

The intuitive control scheme and user interface work extremely well whether playing on console or in handheld mode, so it is the perfect Nintendo Switch 2 experience to have ready at all times. For those who never experienced the appeal of life-sim games, Pokemon Pokopia will easily make somebody realize why it is such a hit genre. Pokopia constantly scratches the itch for 'just one more thing' that makes it difficult to stop playing.

Perhaps an understated element of the gameplay is that this is also a puzzle game and a brain teaser at times. For example, the game doesn't tell the player everything they need to know to craft specific items to build specific structures or perhaps how to find something specific that Ditto may need. It is on the player to think critically, use their surroundings and the help of other Pokemon to figure out clues and what exactly is needed to accomplish the task. This element of the gameplay helped push intrigue and make Pokopia even more fascinating beyond the usual life-sim mechanics.

It is important to note that there's a real world time element to certain tasks. While some structures may complete within 15 minutes, constructing a certain building required waiting until the next day for it to complete. While you can stop the process, it's certainly a mechanic that won't be enjoyed by everybody, especially those who want to move forward quicker with the story. However, the real world time element does offer a reason to check in each day for new challenges to accomplish and new items in the shop.

Overall, it's amazing how well the systems interconnect with each other and that everything just seems to work. It's impressive how the other Pokemon 'know' what to do and actually perform their tasks without any hiccups. The graphics are among the very best in a Pokemon game and the relaxing music is a delight. Despite so many things taking place in the world, there were never any glitches, whether playing docked or in handheld over tens of hours.

Conclusion

Pokemon Pokopia is one of the best surprise hits of the year and in franchise history. Pokopia is arguably the most "lifelike" Pokemon has ever felt because there's such a great sense of community across the massive world. Among the most relaxing and cozy games in Nintendo's vast library, Pokopia still offers intriguing puzzle elements to keep the attention of the player while allowing them to flex their creativity.

Featuring compelling gameplay, enjoyable music and arguably the best graphics ever in a Pokemon game, Pokopia is a true joy to experience on many levels. It is the perfect introduction to the life-sim genre because the Pokemon interactions feel dynamic and the mystery in the story is intriguing enough to keep players progressing to the finale.

Pokopia is rich in content, always dangling something in front of the player to check out and try to achieve. Whether a player wants to spend a few minutes or several hours each day accomplishing tasks, Pokopia is a game that constantly gives players a reason to check in every single day. It is the definition of a "forever" game, but the one that has the most appeal of any of its predecessors because of Pokemon and it perfected the formula of the life-sim genre.
