The 30-year-old Shiffrin is widely regarded as the greatest women's slalom skier of all time, as her 71 career World Cup slalom victories are an all-time record, as are her 108 career World Cup wins overall.
However, the Olympics have been a struggle for her at times, particularly four years ago in Beijing when Shiffrin didn't win a single medal.
After winning gold in the slalom at the 2014 Winter Games, Shiffrin took gold in the giant slalom and silver in the combined in 2018. She surprisingly finished off the podium in slalom, though, coming in fourth place.
Four years later at the 2022 Winter Olympics, missed gates and did not finish in both the slalom and giant slalom, and she also failed to medal in the super-G, downhill, combined and mixed team event.
Now, Shiffrin is back atop the skiing world with her second Olympic gold medal in slalom and third Olympic gold medal overall.
Her three golds also represent an all-time record for the most ever by an American alpine skier at the Olympics:
Rast won silver in the slalom on Wednesday, representing the first Olympic medal of her career.
A three-time World Cup slalom race winner, Rast secured a third consecutive Olympic medal for Switzerland in women's slalom, as Wendy Holdener won silver in 2018 and bronze in 2022.
Meanwhile, the 34-year-old Swenn Larsson added one of the biggest missing pieces from her résumé in the form of an Olympic medal.
While Swenn Larsson is competing at her fourth consecutive Olympics, Wednesday marked the first time she ever medaled, as she held on for bronze.
This year's women's slalom represents the first time since the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City that an Austrian skier did not reach the podium, as Katharina Truppe and Katharina Huber finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
As for Shiffrin, her 2026 Olympics are now over, as she opted for a lighter schedule this time around, running only slalom, giant slalom and the team combined event.
After not medaling in giant slalom or team combined, she made her final event count, and she will leave the 2026 Winter Games on a triumphant note.
