American Jordan Stolz Sets Olympic Record, Wins Gold Medal in 1000m Speed Skating
American speed skater Jordan Stolz won the 1,000-meter gold with a record-breaking run on Wednesday in Milan.
Stolz finished the race with a time of 1:06.28, the best ever recorded in the Olympic event.
Stolz, a two-time world champion in the 1,000-meter race, set the current world record for the event at 1:05.37 in January 2024.
He completed Wednesday's race in the same blades with which he set the 1,000-meter world record, which he has been saving for this event since 2024, per The Athletic's Brittany Ghiroli.
The Wisconsin native made his Olympic debut back in 2022 at age 17 in Beijing, where he finished 13th in the 500-meter race and 14th in the 1,000-meter race.
Since then, Stolz, now 21, has established himself as one of the best speed skaters in the world.
Stolz became the youngest speed skater to ever claim a world title, and the first man to claim three in the same year, when he won the 500-meter, 1,000-meter and 1,500-meter world titles as an 18-year-old in 2023.
He won all three races again in 2024 while becoming the youngest all-around champion since 1978.
Stolz medaled in two events during the 2025 world championship in a year during which he was limited by multiple illnesses and a bike crash.
He still entered the 2026 Olympics as a favorite for four medals, including the 1,000-meter as well as his two other favored distances and the men's mass start.
Only two other Winter Olympians have ever won four gold medals in a single tournament, and no one has done so since Norway's Ole Einar Bjørndalen achieved the feat in biathlon in 2002.
Stolz's next opportunity to chase history will take place Thursday, when the men's 1,000-meter final takes place in Milan. That's followed on Saturday by the 1,500-meter final before the mass start final takes place one week later.
