Alber Breer of NFL Network noted "Kerrigan's five-year extension is worth $57.5 million, with a $16 million signing bonus. Goes thru 2020, $32.78 million over first 3 years."
John Keim of ESPN noted $24.28 million of that is guaranteed.
Speaking to Andrew Walker of Redskins.com, Kerrigan said he looks forward to being able to finish his career with one franchise.
"To get to a moment like this where you get a chance to play out the rest of your NFL career with the team that drafted you, the team that you love, the city that you love, it hasn’t really hit me yet, but it’s an awesome feeling. Now it’s my job to go reward the Redskins for the faith they put in me by playing well this year, and for the rest of my career.
"
Kerrigan, who will turn 27 on August 16, has been with Washington since the franchise drafted him 16th overall in 2011.
Even though Washington's defense has finished in the bottom half of the NFL in yards allowed each of the last three seasons, Kerrigan has held up his end of the bargain. The Purdue alum has started all 64 games and averaged 9.5 sacks in four seasons, including a career-high 13.5 in 2014.
Last season, per Pro Football Focus, Kerrigan pressured the quarterback 72 times last season which was good enough for third in the NFL.
With Kerrigan getting long-term security, the Redskins know they have secured a foundation piece and can focus on building a strong core of talent around him to return to the postseason for the first time since 2012.
