John Cena's Dad Reacts to Son Tapping Out vs. Gunther in Historic WWE Retirement Match
John Cena Sr. isn't thrilled with the finish of his son's retirement match against Gunther, which resulted in the 17-time world champion tapping out after multiple sleeper hold attempts to end the latest edition of Saturday Night's Main Event.
Cena Sr. made his remarks to Bill Apter of 1WrestlingVideo (h/t Subjoheet Mukherjee of Ringside News).
"The only thing I can say is that I saw a lot of people cry," Cena Sr. said. "Do I believe that's the way it should have ended? I would have done it differently. I think it might have been better for everyone if it had ended differently."

After beating LA Knight in the Last Time Is Now tournament last week, Gunther looked into the SmackDown cameras and promised Cena that he would force him to tapout. Gunther kept shooting for that submission to no avail, but he finally got Cena to tap out to cap a 24-minute match.
Cena Sr. understands that his son would lose as he finished his wrestling career, a commonplace occurrence.
"The unwritten rule is that when you're going out, you're going down," he said. "So I guess all I can say is they did what they had to do—what was best for business."
However, Cena Sr. has an issue with the tapout itself.
"Did I expect a tapout? I'll be real honest with you, Bill: I would have expected a pass-out and still Gunther being the winner. I said, 'I'm really not sure that's a tap-out. I wonder if it's a last effort to try to break the hold.' And yeah, that would have been a good way to do it. Then Gunther would have clutched it even more, and Cena would have blacked out—period—without tapping out."
Although the finish is up for debate, Cena closes his career as an absolute legend with a host of accolades.
Cena also got a stirring ovation from WWE personnel and the adoring fans at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
And with that, Cena's remarkable 25-year history in WWE has come to a close.
