Kyle Whittingham to Step Down at Utah, What to Know About New HC Morgan Scalley
Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham will step down from his position following the Utes' Las Vegas Bowl appearance on Dec. 31, the team announced Friday.
Defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley finalized a contract to take over as the Utes' full-time head coach after the team's bowl game.
Scalley, 46, has spent the last 18 years with Utah and the last 10 as Whittingham's defensive coordinator. He was formally named the head coach in waiting before the 2024 season.
"It's been an honor and a privilege to lead the program for the past 21 years and I'm very grateful for the relationships forged with all the players and assistant coaches that have worked so hard and proudly worn the drum and feather during our time here," Whittingham said as part of Friday's announcement.
He's served as head coach of the Utes since 2004 and is currently the school's all-time winningest coach.
He boasts an overall record of 177-88.
After Whittingham took over as Utah's full-time coach ahead of the 2005 season, he helped lead the team to 16 bowl appearances and three conference titles. The Utes also earned consecutive Rose Bowl nods during their 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Utah posted a perfect 13-0 record in 2008 under Whittingham, going on to defeat Alabama and head coach Nick Saban in the Sugar Bowl. The Utes also compiled a winning record in 10 consecutive seasons from 2014-23.
Whittingham was recognized for his coaching prowess with the AFCA and Bear Bryant Awards in 2008 before receiving the Dodd Trophy in 2019.
"The legacy that Kyle Whittingham leaves distinguishes him as one of the most impactful figures in the history of Utah Athletics," Utah athletic director Mark Harlan said, per Friday's announcement. "As the head coach or as an assistant, Coach Whitt played a pivotal role in the most historic and successful seasons in program history, and established championship expectations."
"Kyle Whittingham will forever be appreciated and cherished for his leadership and achievements with Utah Football," he added.
The Utes amassed a 10-2 record in 2025 and are set to face Nebraska in the Las Vegas Bowl in their final game under Whittingham. Kickoff on Dec. 31 is at 3:30 p.m. ET.
