UCLA Football: 5 Players Sure to Surprise at Fall Camp

Jason FrayJul 22, 2015

With fall camp starting up in the early portion of August, a look ahead to the UCLA football roster seems like the logical thing to do.

There are five players with the potential to surprise during fall camp in San Bernardino. None of the five are currently projected to start. In fact, a few might not see the field much—if at all—in 2015.

However, each has his individual talents to make an impact this coming season. This piece will analyze why the five athletes in question are sure to surprise for Jim Mora and the UCLA Bruins.

Soso Jamabo

1 of 5

No one really knows what to expect from Soso Jamabo heading into the fall session.

Although ranked as Scout.com's top running back in the class of 2015, legal problems during his senior year of high school complicated matters a bit.

His talent is undeniable. Yes, UCLA does have a deep backfield with the likes of Paul Perkins and Nate Starks. One could even understand the thought of redshirting Jamabo.

However, he's an exceptional athlete. A player of his caliber should—and likely will—perform well. Jamabo's experience playing against top competition in the state of Texas should also aid his transition to the collegiate level.

It would not be out of the realm of possibility to see Jamabo make a huge impact as a true freshman. A strong fall camp could propel him into the second-string back behind Perkins.

Cameron Judge

2 of 5

Performing as one of UCLA's strongest special teams players, Cameron Judge is looking to take the next step as an outside linebacker.

The former Oaks Christian star has a golden opportunity to garner extensive playing time this season—if not a starting spot. With Myles Jack moving inside, there is a vacant position.

Judge is an athletic, aggressive player. Per his interview above, he's gotten considerably bigger and stronger this offseason.

With a strong fall-camp showing, he could position himself quite nicely in terms of an integral role going forward.

Jordan Lasley

3 of 5

The top of the wide receivers rotation is relatively set, with Jordan Payton, Devin Fuller, Mossi Johnson, Thomas Duarte and Eldridge Massington likely starting the year as the main cogs.

However, don't discount Jordan Lasley.

Of the five mentioned above, Lasley is easily the quickest and fastest of the group. He's got the ability to get behind the defense and truly make big plays over the top vertically.

With a strong camp, there's no question Lasley can surprise—and even make his way consistently into the rotation.

Craig Lee

Craig Lee is a bit of an unknown.

A former Scout.com 4-star recruit, Lee has yet to make much of an impact during his time in Westwood. His physical tools have never been a question. Lee is easily one of the fastest and most impressive-looking Bruins from a physical standpoint.

Regardless, he's yet to put together a resume requisite of playing time.

This will change during the fall-camp setting in San Bernardino. Lee will make it tough enough on the coaching staff to the point he'll garner a role going forward in 2015.

He's far too talented to be languishing on the bench. Even if it's a matter of returning kicks, a player with Lee's ability should be making an impact in some capacity.

William Lockett

5 of 5

The inclusion of William Lockett might surprise some people.

Perhaps the most unheralded of the defensive back recruits headed to UCLA within the 2015 recruiting class, Lockett has multiple traits that should translate well right off the bat.

For one, Lockett is very physical at the point of attack. Quicker than fast, he's adept at jamming corners at the line of scrimmage. The Texas native is also a ball hawk. He routinely made plays throughout his high school career, and he uses his intelligence quite well in terms of positioning.

Don't be surprised if Lockett plays right away. He could make his impact known on special teams immediately. With depth at corner not overly deep, Lockett could also find some playing time in the defensive backs rotation.
