Paul KasabianNov 2, 2025

Benson Kipruto defeated Mutiso Munyao by 16 hundredths of a second to win his first-ever New York Marathon on Sunday.

Kipruto also became the first person to win the Boston, Chicago and New York Marathons. The 34-year-old Kenyan won in Boston in 2021 and Chicago in 2022. He also took gold in the Tokyo Marathon in 2024.

In the women's race, Hellen Obiri crushed a 22-year-old course record with a time of 2:19:51.

Obiri is a four-time major marathon winner, having earned first in Boston twice (2023 and 2024) and New York twice (2024 and 2025). She's also a three-time Olympic medalist (two silvers in the 5000m and one bronze in the marathon) and four-time world champion medalist, including golds in the 5000m in 2017 and 2019.

Marcel Hug also won his seventh men's wheelchair crown, having also earned the honor in 2013, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022 and 2023. He earned first on Sunday with a time of 1:30:16.

Susannah Scaroni won her third women's wheelchair title. She also won in 2022 and 2024 and excelled on this day with a time 1:42:10, nearly six minutes ahead of second-place finisher (and five-time NYC Marathon winner) Tatyana McFadden.

The New York Marathon goes through all five boroughs, with the 26.2-mile course beginning in Staten Island and ending in Manhattan's Central Park.

More than 50,000 people entered this year's Marathon, per Mark Prussin of CBS News.

Kipruto's win is the closest-ever finish in New York City Marathon history, per Travis Miller of NBC Sports.

Before the race, Kipruto said he wanted to win this race and complete the career sweep of American marathon majors, per letsrun.com.

He did just that with a tremendous effort.

Seven men in total finished under 2:10. Kenya took all three top spots with Albert Korir finishing third at 2:08:57.

Great Britain's Patrick Dever (2:08:58) and Switzerland's Matthias Kyburz (2:09:55) rounded out the top five. Americans Joel Reichow (2:09:56) and Charles Hicks (2:09:59) took sixth and seventh.

Obiri was running alongside fellow Kenyan and 2022 winner Sharon Lokedi during the marathon. However, she pulled away from Lokedi in the final mile.

Obiri beat a time once held by Margaret Okayo, a four-time world marathon major record who set course records in New York, Boston and London.

Lokedi also beat that time at 2:20:07, as did Sheila Chepkirui, who took third (2:20:24) to give Kenya all three spots on the podium.

Americans Fiona O'Keeffe (2:22:49) and Annie Frisbie (2:24:12) rounded out the top five.
