The opening ceremony, hosted by NBC's Carson Daly and Kira K. Dixon, promises to set the stage for one of the most exciting events in golf. U.S. captain Keenan Bradley and European captain Luke Donald will then announce their pairings for Friday's morning matches.
Bradley, for the record, won't be competing in the Ryder Cup, even though he was eligible to be a player-captain. Despite finishing 11th in Ryder Cup Points, the 39-year-old decided to leave himself off of the U.S. team.
Bradley and Donald each made six captain's picks to pair with the top six leaders in Ryder Cup points. They'll next choose how to structure their pairings for the two days of team play.
The tournament will open on Friday and run through Sunday with three full days of match play. Friday morning will feature four alternate-shot foursome matches, while Friday afternoon will bring four fourball matches.
Saturday's schedule will also bring four foursome matches in the morning and four fourball matches in the afternoon. The tournament will conclude on Sunday with 12 singles matches.
While golfers can complete any number of times over the first two day—meaning some rarely play—all 12 must participate in singles matches.
Each match is worth one point, and ties award a half-point. As defending champions, the Europeans only need 14 of the 28 points to retain the Ryder Cup. The Americans must reach 14½ points to claim it.
While the European team won the last Ryder Cup, no team has won on foreign soil since the Europeans won in 2012.
The tournament will be played at Bethpage State Park's infamous Black Course, a brutally challenging par-70 course. In addition to thick rough and difficult bunkers, golfers will likely have to contend with the weather as well.
The incoming storms that prompted the rescheduling of the opening ceremony are likely to impact the rest of the weekend as well, according to Golf Digest.
A little wet weather, however, shouldn't break the spirit of the 24 competitors vying for pride this weekend.
