Dabo Swinney Trolled by Fans, Future Questioned After Clemson's Upset Loss to Syracuse
Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney was the subject of online trolling after his Tigers suffered a 34-21 home upset loss at the hands of the Syracuse Orange on Saturday.
The Tigers entered the day as 16.5-point favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook, but they trailed throughout and fell to a disappointing 1-3 overall and 0-2 in ACC play on the year.
Several fans took the opportunity to crack jokes a Swinney's expense on social media following Clemson's second consecutive conference loss:
Although Swinney has enjoyed unprecedented success at Clemson, it didn't stop fans from discussing the idea that his future with the program could be in jeopardy:
After losing last week to Georgia Tech, Swinney faced a ton of criticism, and he clapped back to some degree while speaking to the media.
As seen at the 23:50 mark of the video, Swinney asked, "What's so bad about our program?" He went on to note that Clemson hasn't finished with worse than a 9-4 record over the past 14 years before adding, "Why are we held to a different standard than all of these other teams out there who ain't never won nothing?"
Before Swinney was elevated to head coach in 2008, Clemson's only national championship came back in 1981.
However, Swinney led Clemson to nine ACC titles in 14 years from 2011 to 2024, and the Tigers won national championships in 2016 and 2018.
Digging out of a 1-3 hole to win the ACC and qualify for the College Football Playoff feels highly unlikely at this point, though, especially given how Clemson has played thus far.
Despite knowing they were under the microscope and in desperate need of a win Saturday, the Tigers came out flat, going down 10-0 in the first quarter and 24-7 in the second quarter.
A lengthy lightning delay gave Clemson a chance to regroup at halftime, but it was more of the same in the second half with Syracuse adding 10 more points in the third quarter to extend the lead to 34-14.
Clemson has a much-needed bye next week before returning to action on the road against North Carolina on Oct. 4, but unless the Tigers win out, a CFP berth may not be in the cards this season.
