The American Nightmare has been one of the key figures in Cena's 2025 retirement tour. Cena's heel turn at Elimination Chamber came when he hit Rhodes with a low blow, leading to their main-event match on the second night of WrestleMania 41.
Cena defeated Rhodes in the bout to win his record-breaking 17th world championship. He went on to successfully defend the title against Randy Orton at Backlash and CM Punk at Night of Champions.
Rhodes earned a title shot at SummerSlam by winning the men's King of the Ring tournament. He is one of only two men Cena has wrestled twice in singles matches as part of the retirement tour, with R-Truth being the other.
The match at SummerSlam saw Rhodes avenge his WrestleMania loss by pinning Cena after hitting a Cody Cutter through a table, followed by the Cross Rhodes.
Rhodes became the first person to pin Cena in a one-on-one match since November 2023 when Cena lost to Solo Sikoa.
Cena officially turned back to being a babyface on the go-home episode of Friday Night SmackDown leading into SummerSlam. The 48-year-old has 12 dates remaining on his retirement tour, with six confirmed appearances through Sept. 15.
