Tiffany Stratton Apologized to Charlotte for Divorce Diss, 'We Both Went Off Script'
WWE women's champion Tiffany Stratton admitted this week that she apologized for an off-script jab she took at Charlotte Flair during the build toward their WrestleMania 41 match.
Appearing Tuesday on the Impaulsive podcast (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News) with fellow WWE Superstar Logan Paul, Stratton discussed what led up to her controversial quip about Charlotte's love life, and an eventual apology:
"Charlotte Flair is Charlotte Flair," Stratton said. "She's a legend. And I was the champion at the time. Things were heated. She's very competitive, I'm also very competitive. I'm trying to prove to Charlotte Flair that I can go, I can stand up to her, I'm worthy of this title. So yeah, s--t got heated. We both went off script. It happens. ... I did have to apologize. And that was that."
After winning the women's Royal Rumble match, Flair chose Stratton as her opponent at WrestleMania 41.
That led to a series of heated verbal exchanges between them on episodes of SmackDown in the weeks prior to WrestleMania.
In one of them, Flair seemed to talk over Stratton and dominate the conversation, leading to questions about whether Tiffany was capable of holding her own against one of the biggest women's Superstars in WWE history.
Stratton went on the offensive the following week, though, saying Flair was "0-3 in marriages" in reference to her three real-life divorces. Tiffany slid out of the ring right after, and Charlotte countered by claiming that Tiffany's real-life boyfriend, WWE Superstar Ludwig Kaiser, was "in her DMs."
The segment was featured on an episode of the Netflix series WWE: Unreal, which provides fans with a behind-the-scenes look at WWE and its creative processes.
Following the segment, WWE head of creative Triple H was shown asking if either of them had gone off script. When he was told that Stratton's comment about Flair's divorces was not scripted, he told someone to have Tiffany apologize to Charlotte.
On Impaulsive, Stratton said she is someone who can "fully embrace being in the wrong," and had "no problem apologizing."
At the same time, Tiffany doesn't seem to regret taking a personal shot at Flair, saying: "I think what I did was justified, but maybe I shouldn't have gone that far. But I do feel like I was justified in what I did."
Stratton and Flair went on to have a hard-hitting, physical match at WrestleMania 41, which Tiffany won to retain the WWE Women's Championship.
Regardless of the personal nature of their feud, both Tiffany and Charlotte seem to have emerged from it better than they were before, as Stratton is still WWE women's champ and Flair is now one half of the WWE women's tag team champions with Alexa Bliss.
