Scottie Scheffler Wins 2025 British Open and Thrills Fans by Dominating Leaderboard
Scottie Scheffler left no doubt on his way to a dominant win at the 2025 British Open for his fourth career major victory and first at the event.
Scheffler, who entered Sunday's final round at Royal Portrush with a four-shot lead, shot 3-under 68 to finish with an overall score of -17. Harris English came in second place at -13, followed by Chris Gotterup in third at -12.
The World No. 1 Golfer has now completed three out of the four legs of the career Grand Slam, with the U.S. Open as the only major that he's yet to win.
Scheffler set the tone early on Sunday with a birdie on the first hole, and he never looked back, opening a seven-shot lead at one point. He ran into a little trouble with his first double-bogey of the entire tournament on the eighth hole, but he bounced back with a birdie on the ninth to keep his positive momentum. He recorded his fifth birdie of the day on the 12th hole to highlight a clean back-nine.
Scheffler's dominance throughout the weekend removed any suspense and captivated fans, who took to social media to praise his impressive victory on Sunday:
Entering the final round, Scheffler's competitors all but knew that the result was a foregone conclusion. Some praised him for his consistency over the past few years, as he's been on an incredible run since his first Masters Tournament win in 2022. His 149-week run as the World No. 1 is the longest since Woods' record 281 weeks from 2005 to 2010.
"Talking of execution, he's probably the best in the business right now," Rory McIlroy said of Scheffler after the third round.
Bryson DeChambeau and Jordan Spieth tried to explain Scheffler's greatness on Sunday:
Next up on the PGA Tour schedule is the 3M Open, which begins on Thursday at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota. Scheffler will later turn his attention toward defending his TOUR Championship title next month at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.
