British Open 2025 Odds and Betting Tips for Golf's Top Contenders

Joe TanseyJul 16, 2025

There are a handful of different ways to put together your bets for The Open Championship.

The simplest one is to wager on the in-form golfers, a list led by Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy may get the nod over Scheffler in some circles this week because he's playing on home soil at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland.

Past success at Portrush could also come into consideration. Shane Lowry won The Open there in 2019. A handful of other notable golfers finished in the top 10 that year as well.

Certain golfers just show up for The Open regardless of where it takes place. That's a category Jordan Spieth fits into. He has five top-25 finishes in his last six British Open starts.

Favor Rory McIlroy Among Favorites

The 153rd Open Championship - Wednesday Previews

After Rory McIlroy won The Masters, there was an expectation that he'd compete for every major in 2025 because the pressure of the career Grand Slam was off his shoulders.

McIlroy tied for 47th at the PGA Championship and tied for 19th at the US Open, but his recent form suggests he'll be in contention for the Claret Jug.

McIlroy produced two straight top-10 finishes, including a tie for second at last week's Scottish Open.

He finally rounded back into form and he's got the extra motivation to thrive in his home country. He'll undoubtedly be one of the biggest fan favorites all week.

There's no shame in betting on Scottie Scheffler or Jon Rahm among the three favorites, but everything seems to be falling into place perfectly for McIlroy to make a significant run at his second major of the season.

At +750, McIlroy carries more betting value compared to Scheffler, and at minimum, the -140 price on a top-10 finish should be considered since he has five top-10 Open finishes since 2016.

Take Course History Into Consideration

The 2019 Open leaderboard featured quite the collection of golfers.

Shane Lowry won the event to capture his first major. Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler and Robert MacIntyre were among the top 10 finishers.

Fleetwood and Hatton, two of the best golfers to have never won a major, could bank on their previous success at Portrush to contend this week.

Fleetwood has three top-10 Open placings in the last five tournaments. Hatton has three top-20 finishes in the same span and landed in a tie for fourth at the U.S. Open.

The two Englishmen seem to be better choices this week than Lowry, who has two missed cuts and a tie for 42nd in his three major starts in 2025.

MacIntyre will under consideration as well because of his strong finish at the US Open.

The wild-card of that group is Koepka, who rebounded from some terrible major-tournament form with a tie for 12th at the US Open.

Koepka's major success occurred at the PGA Championship and US Open, but he's been a solid golfer at The Open as well with three top-six finishes.

Koepka is +5500 to win outright, +260 to finish in the top 20 and +600 to land in the top 10. He might have the best betting value among the players who had success at Portrush six years ago.

Keep an Eye on Jordan Spieth

4 of 4
GOLF-OPEN-BRITAIN

Jordan Spieth hasn't won a major since 2017, but he typically find his way into the front two pages of the leaderboard at The Open.

The 2017 Open champion finished inside the top 25 in each of his last seven overseas majors.

If anything, the Texan is consistent, which is something you can respect when breaking down which golfers to bet on.

Spieth is +240 to finish in the top 20, a very reasonable price given his track record on links courses. There's even value on Spieth to finish in the top 30 at +140.

It might seem like a stretch to bet on Spieth to win outright at +5500, but he could at least make you money in the finishing position prop market.
