Windhorst Says LeBron James Is Facing 'Beginning of the End' with Lakers amid Rumors
One way or another, LeBron James' time with the Los Angeles Lakers seems to be nearing an end, according to ESPN's Brian Windhorst.
"I don't mean this to be controversial, it's just true. This is the beginning of the end with the Lakers for LeBron," Windhorst said Monday on NBA Today.
James exercised his $52.6 million player option to return to the Lakers for the 2025-26 season on Sunday, but his future in Los Angeles still isn't completely certain.
Rich Paul, James' longtime agent, told ESPN's Shams Charania that his client is "closely monitoring" the Lakers' offseason moves to see if the team is building to contend for a championship.
"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said Sunday. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career."
James and the Lakers reportedly haven't discussed a trade yet, but his future with the team beyond the 2025-26 campaign is still murky.
Even if he stays in Los Angeles, the 40-year-old has admitted that he's thought about retirement despite not setting an exact timetable to make that decision.
James has spent the past seven seasons with the Lakers, averaging 26.6 points, 7.9 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game on 51.3/36.0/72.9 shooting splits.
The NBA's all-time leading scorer has helped lead Los Angeles to five playoff appearances, including a championship in 2020.
