LeBron James, Lakers Haven't Discussed Trade amid NBA Rumors, Says Rich Paul
Rich Paul, LeBron James' agent and business partner, revealed that James and the Los Angeles Lakers haven't discussed a trade despite his uncertain future with the team.
"Rich Paul told me there has been no trade discussions, there have been no trade talks with the Lakers," NBA insider Chris Haynes said Monday on NBA TV. "People have been speculating on certain teams that he might be interested in. I'm told that all that talk is false. There has been no trade talks, there has been no extension talk."
On Sunday, Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania that James wants to compete for a championship moving forward and will be "closely monitoring" Los Angeles' moves during the offseason to see if the team will "field a title-contending roster."
"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career."
"We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career," he added.
James picked up his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season on Sunday, keeping him under contract with the Lakers.
While the NBA's all-time leading scorer could provide a boost to the championship hopes of several teams, a trade may not materialize during the offseason. ESPN's Bobby Marks reported that "there isn't" much of a market for James given his hefty cap hit next season.
Los Angeles seems to be focused on staying competitive in the Western Conference during the 2025-26 campaign, as the team is reportedly interested in veteran center Brook Lopez and has been linked to Deandre Ayton as well.
While James will be keeping an eye on the Lakers' offseason moves as they look to build on a 50-32 finish in 2025, trade discussions involving the 21-time All-Star aren't actively occurring.
