LeBron James Exercises $52.6M Lakers Contract Option Ahead of 2025 NBA Free Agency

Joseph ZuckerJun 29, 2025

LeBron James will wear purple and gold for at least one more season.

ESPN's Shams Charania reported the 21-time All-Star is triggering his $52.6 million player option with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Rich Paul, James' agent, explained the decision, with Charania clarifying that LeBron "will be closely monitoring the Lakers' moves and whether the team is positioning itself this offseason to field a title-contending roster."

"LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all. We are very appreciative of the partnership that we've had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

"We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what's best for him."

While James was eligible to become a free agent this summer, he pretty much had one of two plausible paths. He'd either pick up the option or decline it in lieu of signing another short-term contract with the Lakers.

That's pretty much how he has operated ever since first joining Los Angeles in 2018, and he has stuck around when the franchise had a much worse overall outlook than it does now.

The midseason acquisition of Luka Dončić presented a new variable.

LeBron was clearly disappointed to some degree to see Anthony Davis go as part of that deal. They were teammates for six seasons and won a title together in 2020.

Lakers insider Jovan Buha also reported in February that some lower-lever staffers with the Lakers were initially concerned with how James would respond to being blindsided by the trade. General manager Rob Pelinka kept negotiations with the Dallas Mavericks tightly under wraps, and that meant excluding the franchise's best player.

But Buha said the internal fears about James' mindset were quickly put to rest, and he didn't raise any alarm bells publicly like he has done passive aggressively in the past to signal any discontent.

James stuck around and averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists in 70 appearances. Even at 40 years old, he remains one of the five or 10 best players in the NBA.

The Lakers, meanwhile, finished third in the Western Conference at 50-32, though a first-round exit in five games to the Minnesota Timberwolves was a bit of a reality check.

In general, the vibes around the organization have improved by leaps and bounds between last summer and now.

Heading into the 2024 offseason, it was harder and harder to avoid the conclusion the Lakers had plateaued with LeBron and AD, and no amount of tinkering around the margins would make them a serious championship threat again.

In Dončić, Pelinka got a player who's not only better than Davis but also six years younger. The Lakers have a true cornerstone who can carry the torch once James is no longer in Southern California, and that's the kind of thing free agents and disgruntled stars will take note of.

It's too early to call L.A. the clear-cut championship favorite for 2026. Pelinka and the front office have some work to do on that front.

Assuming he doesn't request a trade between now and opening night, James will relish having a full offseason to train with Dončić and improve their chemistry on the court. Even if he doesn't get a fifth title ring before retiring from the NBA, life on the Lakers should be a lot more fun than it had become over the last few years.
