Lionel Messi, Miami Disappoint Fans with Blowout Loss to PSG in FIFA Club World Cup
Nobody expected Inter Miami to defeat PSG, the reigning European champions. But boy did it get bad.
The Parisians blew out the MLS side, 4-0, in the Round of 16 at the Club World Cup on Sunday. João Neves led PSG with a brace, Achraf Hakimi added a tally and a Tomás Avilés own-goal in the first half added insult to injury.
All four goals came in the first half. Barring a flurry of miraculous Messi free-kicks (that never came), Inter Miami's chances were extinguished within 45 minutes. At the final whistle, PSG had out-shot Inter Miami 19-7 (9-3 on goal), controlled 66.5 percent of possession and had seven corners to three for their counterparts.
It was a rough display from the MLS side, and fans and pundits didn't hold back while admonishing the performance:
Look, this wasn't a fair fight. PSG are younger, more athletic, more talented and have proven themselves against the best competition in the world. Inter Miami are currently sixth in the MLS' Eastern Conference, a competition that pales in comparison to France's Ligue 1, let alone the powerhouses in Europe like England's Premier League, Spain's La Liga, Germany's Bundesliga or Italy's Serie A.
This is the same PSG that put five goals on Inter Milan in the Champions League final. For the Parisians, Inter Miami were nothing more than a light snack.
Still, Inter Miami will be disappointed to have offered such minimal friction in the matchup. Losing by a goal or two would have been respectable given the quality of their opponents. Losing by four goals, all allowed in one half, is far harder to stomach.
